Brilliant photos - having chased one round the garden all of one afternoon last year and still didn't get a shot, I know how difficult it is! Well done you, fantastic :)

Thank you for introducing me to this lovely moth Janey. I have never seen one before and your pics are great!

Wonderful photos Janey. I've never seen one of them, they are very much like a humming bird aren't they? You're lucky to have one, and very skilful to get the photos.

fantastic janey, i hate moths but this one is amazing so like a humingbird isnt it, still not sure i would like to meet him though, great shots janey ;o))

Thanks for all the lovely comments everyone....they are amazing to see, the first time we saw them was in Spain and we really thought they were Hummingbirds....there were lots there....they would fly from the flowers passed your ears....with a really loud wing sound.....when I found out they were moths.....yikes...I decided to watch them from afar....Lol!
20 Jul, 2010
Hi Janey, I'm delighted you've had one visit too. Wonderful to see, arent they. So difficult not to frighten them but you just have to get those shots! What flower is he/she feeding on?
20 Jul, 2010
I remember your pics from last year Dawn....they are so quick aren't they! It seems to like the trailing geraniums, it came back today for a couple of minutes...:o)
Last year it came to the same planters with similar geraniums, doesn't go down the garden though.......
20 Jul, 2010
Hi Janey, its was this year ours visited - 12th June :-) I havent seen one for about 4/5 years prior to this though. I'm delighted for you, I think I need to grow trailing geraniums next year. Both times ours have fed on the Valerian, in the wild area of our garden.
20 Jul, 2010
Eeh...me minds not what it was...Lol! I'm wondering if they've come up on the warm air Dawn....wonder if their eyes see bright pink/red...that would explain your valerian and the geraniums?

This Moth must have remembered your garden, from last year Janey!
Made its way back, knowing, what lovely plants were waiting for it.. you
have to be so still, so as not to scare the moth, whilst taking pic, and
still not move, in case you get a bit of shake, when taking a shot....you have done so well, Janey! `How long do Moths live for Janey? i do not think they
live long, i will have to Google to find out...
20 Jul, 2010
Oh well done Janey..such lovely photos...well done ! Can just see you tracking him with that camera ! Lol
20 Jul, 2010
Lol Janey, my memory is like a sieve. Funny you should say about the warm air, we've not seen them since we had a good Summer, i.e. 4/5 years. Let's set lots of pinks and reds :-)

Well captured, had our first one of the year this week.....in the garden room, but OH put it outside before I could photograph it, fascinating arn't they?
20 Jul, 2010
They are Dotty, first glance you think its a humming bird, dont you.
20 Jul, 2010
Lovely pics, Janey, what a treat to have captured this creature on camera.
21 Jul, 2010

Thanks Ob....there must be a few around at the mo...there was one humming round the bizzylizzies where I work today too...
I think it did remember Fp from last year.....unless of course they don't live that long...Lol....pleased you like the pics...I'll have to google it too and have a read.......
Thanks Bb and Dotty,......fancy it coming in your garden room...I bet it sounded loud! Solid! that's definitely a bloke's word......:o))
Thank you Grandmage and Khayla...they fly so quickly that they've gone nearly before you've noticed them.....
They are so different to other moths aren't they Speedy......and the little eye mark really makes it look like a tiny bird.......
Apparently they're flying in from North Africa......such a weeny thing and all that way!

I get a few regularly in July/August when they arrive here in Norfolk. They adore Honeysuckle and Nicotiana particularly. Any plants with funnel shaped flowers really.
But they are normally on my Nicotiana mid afternoon.
Brilliant creatures!!!
25 Jul, 2010
Thanks Andy......haven't grown nicotiana here....will give it a go next year....amazing moths aren't they....:o)
