Autumn Swansong in my Garden

Some of you will already know that I’m a bit under the weather at the moment. Been confined to bed with the dreaded Flying Pig Fever since Sunday and today my head still resembles a mucus factory (sorry).
With only a seed catalogue to keep my spirits up, I was quickly going stark-staring confined to the indoors….and today the garden called to me…..
So, I wrapped up warm, took a cup of coffee and my camera and bravely headed out with Birtie. It was a typically dull October day, but I was suprised by the amount of colour I found…..
Hot-coloured Pelargoniums are still going strong and shy little Cyclamen peep through the grass. The ivy on the right is Hedera helix ‘Buttercup’.
The golden leaved shrub is Cotinus coggygria ‘Golden Spirit’. Later, the leaves will turn bright pink before falling. The big yellow flower is a fennel, but more of that later….
Growing up the fence is Eccremocarpus scabre (Chilean Glory Vine). The seed for this came to be via the GoY seed swap last year. It’s taken a while to get going, thanks to our poor summer, but is looking super now! By a happy accident, the Verbena bonariensis has grown up through the vine and I think the two look superb together.
A closeup of that Eccremocarpus flower.
Elsewhere, and my reliable little patio rose is still flowering its heart out! And, maybe I’m just getting used to it, but that orange fence doesn’t look half as bad as it did…..the colour seems to pick up on the Autumn tones.
Azalea ‘Glowing Embers’, next to the pond, is doing exactly what it says on the tin. I can’t help up feel this plant was an exceptionally good buy. Not only do you get gorgeous yellowy orange flowers in spring, but this cracking Autumn colouring too.
Rudbeckia. I have to move this as this spot is too dry for it.
Acer leaf.
Agapanthus seed head – I will let these pods ripen so that I can collect the seed.
Birtie is pointing out the lovely deep colouring of this Sedum. Please avert your eyes from the leaves I haven’t swept away yet ;-)
Even the dieing Hostas looked pretty to me today. Maybe it’s the cough medicin talking…
Fuchsia ‘Satellite’ still going strong. The silvery plant in the foreground is Polmonaria ‘Diana Clare’.
There’s Azalea ‘Glowing Embers’ again.
These are the little white flowers of Persicaria ‘Red Dragon’. Just a little bonus feature of this very attractive plant.
There are Echinaceas too of course.
It’s that Azalea again……I do love it….
This is a Cox apple. Mmmmm, delish!
The Cosmos will keep flowering until the first frost…
Organised chaos. I started moving my tenders into the greenhouse last week. Problem is, the tomatos are still going. When they are finished, there will be more room for my plants and I will actually be able to stand inside my greenhouse once again!
Tomatoes….
This is my BIGGEST pepper this year! He’s a monster!
These are Cyclamen seedlings just emerging.
There are still some roses out.
This is the grass path with Stipa gigantea to the right of the picture.
The chimney birdbath is full after last night’s rain. You can see that fennell again centre back of the picture. Let’s go and have a closer look……
I’ve been trying to get this fennel to grow in a place about 5ft away from here for several years. This year it vanished from that spot and intead popped up over here, where it has done exceptionally well. Explain that for me if you will?!
This Cistus seems very late…
Birtie would like to know if I’m coming indoors now as her toes are getting cold and she would like feeding please.
Hang on Birtie, I just want to show them these Dahlias before we go inside…
That’s it. Birtie? Where are you?
What are you doing up there? Silly puss-cat……come on, let’s go in.

Di's right that is a brilliant blog Sid, wonderful pics, wonderful plants and wonderful Birtie. What a treat. You have so many interesting plants and so much colour still, my Cosmos is just about gone. Don't blame you for going back to the Azalea, it's lovely and so is that Cotinus - I might have to find a space for one of those somewhere! I hope you're on the mend now, give Birtie a cuddle from me. :o))

Gad you're a true Brit, Bulldog spirit and all that. You must be feeling rough though. I really like your garden and as you say it's still full of colour, interest too. Too many pics to comment on bit suffice to say I like them all. I'll take a rain check on commenting on the colour of the fence, lol. except to say that I too chose that colour and went over it again with a darker colour. I enjoyed reading your blog, like your sense of humour.

I hope you're feeling better now. Bertie is lovely :o) My satellite fuchsiais flowering now. It's got unusual flowers. Don't worry about the path. It looks natural in autumn with leaves on it.

Hi Sid, I too enjoyed your blog and tour but do you really have time to be roaming around your garden with a camera?
Only joking of course. I think your garden is gorgeous and that fence is ..... well ........ it's ........... orange! ! ! Lol ;~)))

Hi Sid - oh dear! The dreaded swine flu strikes another GOY member! You take care - and get well soon!
I'm glad you felt well enough to amble round your garden and show us some lovely photos. :-))

Hope you get well soon. A garden as colourful and interesting will be a real tonic better than Tamiflu!!

Lovely blog - great pics and lovely Birtie keeping you company - hope you feel better soon!
8 Oct, 2009
Thank you all for the lovely and comforting comments! You have all made me smile, which is sure to help me get better!
Louise - you can't have her!! lol
Hywel - glad to hear your Satellite is flowering for you - it's an odd shape isn't it...?!
Lincslass - do you mean my Felix domesticus 'Variegatus'?
Fluff - it's Verbena bonariensis - you can see it more clearly in the picture with the Eccremocarpus. Yes, Pheobe does look a little like my Birts :-)
TT - no, it's our fence, but it's attached to our neighbour's shed, which is falling down. So the fence will have to come down at some point, so I'm reluctant to do anything with it. Just trying to cover it up with plants! Had hoped the paint would fade a bit, but it must have been really good paint, unfortunately!
Ian - well, honestly! LOL
Thanks for all your kind wishes folks!
Sarah.

Enjoyed the stroll through your garden; with the commentary, I felt like I was listening to you explain it all to me. Hope you are feeling much better after the tour. It blessed my socks off.
8 Oct, 2009
You've still got lots of colour in the garden Sid.
Sorry to hear you've been ill :-)
Love your Stipa Gigantea.
8 Oct, 2009
And what's so wrong about orange young Digger me lad...I have orange decking....nothing remotely weird about that...just been tangoed that's all!
8 Oct, 2009
Wishing you a speedy recovery! Flying pigs, eh? Poor you! Just dont start grunting & growing a curly tail!
Lovely blog, great pics, shame about the fence! I would just HAVE to paint it!
Take it easy!
8 Oct, 2009
Feel better soon! Is the flying pig fever the same thing as swine flu? Never heard it called that...Your garden looks great! Wish I could have a bite of that apple...
10 Oct, 2009
Hi Sid, glad you're feeling well enough to stroll in the garden with your cat and camera. I enjoyed going along. I've been taking pix of my shrubs as they turn bright but my flowers and tomatos are a thing of summer long past. That is a very impressive pepper! Fell in love with Birtie during our stroll. Love her expressive face.
10 Oct, 2009
What a beautiful and varied garden you have. Glad it's cheering you up and really hope you're back to strength soon. Don't bother sweeping up quite all the leaves, life's too short!
Lovely blog Sid : )
10 Oct, 2009
glad you're feeling well enough to take a walk round your garden, it's beautiful out there, no wonder you didn't want to stay indoors :)
11 Oct, 2009
Some folk think that come October, "it's all over" well judging by the colour in your pics and today's weather forecast, it will be quit a while before we can say "it is now" I can well remember when the October frosts would cut everything down on a regular basis but recently the winters are getting shorter which means more time in our gardens. Can't be bad.
11 Oct, 2009
Your garden is lovely Sid. Especially the Azalea ! Birtie is a babe !! Hope you're feeling better today :-)))
11 Oct, 2009
excellent blog, thanks for showing us around your garden.
11 Oct, 2009
Thank you for all the kind comments! Still got a cough, but feeling much better now and back at work today - Boo-Hoo!
Madperth - I'll try not to LOL
Raquel - Flying Pig Fever is what you get when Bird Flu mutates with Swine Flu lol
Weeds - I know! That pepper is a meal in itself! x-) Birtie is my Best Girl - but I don't tell her so in case she gets big-headed ;-)
Avis - I will have to check my book on propagation and get back to you on that one! It didn't produce any viable seed last year, but it did the year before and I managed to germinate 2 seeds - one died, but the other did well and I have a healthy young plant that will flower......one day!
12 Oct, 2009
So glad to get to the end of the comments and find you well Sarah..goodness..I did love the walk through your garden..what a pretty garden..I enjoyed it all..! :) and Birtie was a big help to you I could tell..and has been a big help in curing you of your FPF...so glad you are ok..

14 Oct, 2009
Your welcome Sid

A month late & a dollar short, but worth catching up on your autumn display. Pulmonaria Diana Clare caught my eye so I had to strain to see the fuchsia! Glowing Embers takes off the chill & went in my little book. Thanks for making your "almost last act" photographs of the garden & glad you're better after the beach.
5 Nov, 2009
Thanks Orgratis :-) That Pulmonaria is a little stunner isn't she! Can't wait to see what the flowers look like in the spring.
