Greater Spotted Woodpecker Chick

At last the woodpecker chick came to visit us. The poor thing has been stuck up a tree, 50ft in the air for the last few weeks.

It started off nervously, under the hawthorn hedge, waiting to be fed. Then got a little more confident and ventured out, across to the wall, feeder and bird bath.

Chick came to the bird bath. Dad (on RHS) teaching the chick table manners. “Now, say PLEASE !”

Then another wait …

“Hurry up Dad” …

Dad: “What do you say ?”

Chick: “PLEASE”.

“Looks like rain Dad”.

Another wait …..

Still waiting …

“Come on Dad”

Ahh …. at last, “HAPPY DAYS !”

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog, as much as I enjoyed taking the photos. Regards, Alanb

This is the benefit of living in the countryside Alan. Nothing like that, would dare come near here. The only visitors here are wood pigeons, a few black birds and the friendly robin.

Fabulous Alan, great pictures, hope he becomes a regular visitor;0) I have two Doves Lovey and Dovey [OH says daft names Lol] they come at least twice a day and a couple of years ago they brought their chicks too , think there is a blog somewhere! I love your bird feeder too;0)

Kath, Steve, Kokkinotria and Carole. Thanks for looking and glad you enjoyed it. We know we are lucky having these types of feathered visitors, it really is a pleasure to watch.

Carole, Lovey and Dovey sounds great names for doves. What names would you suggest for 3 woodpeckers ? Beaky, Mick and Titch, maybe .... lol.

We have them on the bird table but haven't seen the babies, so cute :0)

great photos. So lucky, the only birds we get are pigeons, magpies, robins, blue tits and great tits and as lovely as they are it would be great to see lots of other birds.

Great blog Alan and I love the photo's and witty captions, we do get lots of birds here and I enjoy watching their antics but I'm also envious as alas no woodpeckers..

Sue, so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you, for taking the time to comment. There are actually two chicks now. I will pick out half a dozen of the best photos and put out a second blog over the weekend.

I, for one, will really look forward to that.

Your welcome. Lindak, when I replied to your comment on the chick photo, I didn't realise you had already seen this blog. Apologies Alan .... :-))

7 Jun, 2014

Alan, I looked at the chick photo first then found your blog. Lovely to see.

These pics are a joy - thank you! Don't you love the little red "hats" that the babies have? Its good to see Dad doing some of the caring - Mum must be very tired by this stage.

7 Jun, 2014

I think Mum deserves a rest, unless of course she is looking after a third chick?

Brilliant photos, Alan, really enjoyed seeing them - more please :)

Thank you Gee.

Beautiful photos of such pretty birds ... I have been watching an adult Goldfinch feeding a juvenile this morning ... better than any TV programme! :o)

10 Jun, 2014

Thank you Shirley_t. You are lucky Shirley, we hardly ever see the Goldfinches now, despite having Nyger seed out for them. I think they visited us once a couple of weeks ago and ate some seeds off our cornflowers.

10 Jun, 2014

I gave up with Nyger seed Alan and switched to sunflower hearts - they really love them!

10 Jun, 2014

Thank you Shirley_t, I will try the switch. I will put the Nyger seed in a separate tray, I assume the other birds will eat them.

10 Jun, 2014

Definitely ... they're not all as choosy as Goldfinches!

11 Jun, 2014

Alan you can get special nyjer feeders with tiny little slots which keep bigger beaks out. . Its amazing how quickly the goldfinches find them.

11 Jun, 2014

Steragram, we have one of those feeders. I have just read if the seed isn't eaten within 4 weeks it dries out and is less attractive to the birds. This may be our problem. I need to discard the old seed, sterilise the feeder and put some fresh Nyjer seed in it.
