Allotment - Part 2

Having waited for several weeks until the snow had gone….and hoping for a fine day…….at last!!!!…Monday morning arrived, the sky was blue, the sun was shining (well obviously…lol) and there was a warm(ish) gentle breeze…….Yes….it was time to start work on the allotment garden. We (yes Brian came too) collected our tools; donned our boots and off we went. Fortunately it is only a 5 minute walk.

We started by moving all those pallets (and they were heavy!!) into two neat piles. Brian came armed with his hacksaw to cut off the lock on the shed…but found that the blade was blunt,,,,tut.tut….will have to try again another day, or borrow a bolt cutter. The shed is going to need some repairs as the roof is coming away from the walls, but I’m sure Brian will be able to do something about that!

Anyway…..to work……..I was quite surprised how easy the soil was to fork over; it wasn’t clumpy as I expected…but quite friable. A few pieces of creeping buttercup and wicken grass (couch) were carefully disposed of along with bedraggled sprout plants and brambles, and a bounty of red onions and shallots!!

The only thing to spoil our pleasant morning was cemetery workers lighting a fire……no…..not that sort of fire….lol….they were burning rubbish and tree branches….honest…!!

After 2 hours, one bed was nearly finished…..after all it was my first gardening for several months and my motto is “little and often”…..I was a little sore the next day though!!

Till the next time…….

Weeded border.

Alice you are quite right ,it`s better to do a little at a time and enjoy rather than tiring yourself out. Shame you couldn`t get into the shed but there is another day for that, moving pallets around can be backbreaking ,but they are so useful and make grand compost keepers as well as good fencing if you have lots. Well done both of you and isn`t it a good feeling when you can see where you`ve been........

I wonder what you'll find in the shed.....assuming you can open the door. Well you're off to a flying start and no doubt you'll be posting pics of bumper crops later. Nice that it's only 5 mins from home.

Wow, it's good to get started isn't it. Be sure to take a flask and a 'stottie' next time and force yourself to stop for 15 mins. Little and often is definitely good advice (BUT, are you any good at taking your own advice ?). It's going to be a great year !

Not always Muddy.....lol....:))

Knowing when to stop is a real problem. I have to be dragged in from the garden when it's a fine day....do be careful, won't you - but you DO seem to know how to pace yourself! :-))))
