Progress update on the new outdoor garden beds - slowly, slowly getting ...

Back in April (during our autumn) I arrived home from YET another (these are hubbie’s words as he doesn’t get down as often as I do) trip down south to see the kids and grandkids. In my absence hubbie had built some new block walls around an old duranta repens shrub) for a couple of raised garden beds.
Another wall was added through the middle in August (during our winter) and plans began for the planting. Not being able to spend a fortune on plants I’ve been buying things in dribs and drabs and waiting for cuttings to grow on. Anyway planting had to wait until the beginning of spring because winter, despite being very mild in temps., is just too dry to start off new plants.
Well spring has sprung and some plants have been planted … so this is a record of the progress so far. There are still lots of holes to fill … slowly, slowly plants WILL come!!! and, of course, fingers crossed for some decent rain in summer.

Now for a closer look at the different beds so far:
AFTER – the red bed:
There’s a baby callistemon, an aralia, a poinsettia, a kalanchoe, some wildflower seedlings, and an anigozanthus hiding in that bed as well as the hemerocallis, the celosia, the gerbera, the salvia, the mesembryanthemum and the sprekelia that can be seen.
AFTER – the red bed at the top, and the orange and yellow bed:
In the orange and yellow bed there’s a variegated ixora, a sedum, an osteospurmum, a kalanchoe, a turnea ulmifolia, a calibrochoa and a bracteantha.
AFTER – the lights and darks bed (at the bottom of photo):
AFTER – another closer view of the lights and darks bed so far:
It’s a bit hard to see but in this bed there are gazanias, verbena, a tiny geranium, an osteospurmum, two cordylines, an angelonia, scaevola, hemigraphis, a medinilla, gladiolus callianthus and a pelargonium – most of which is still pretty small.
AFTER – the purples/pinks bed:
AFTER – another view of the purple/pinks bed:
In this bed there’s a gomphrena, two osteospumums, a barleria, an angelonia, a torenia, a plectranthus, a dichorisandra, a buddleia, some hemerocallis, some alstroemeria, a kalanchoe pumila and some wildflower seedlings.
This is very much a work in progress – the purple bed needs so many more plants and there’s another whole bed behind the purple bed to fill as well yet – it will be for the blues. I’ve already lost some plants (thanks to the friendly creatures around here) and some plants have ended up in the wrong beds – thanks to wrong labelling of colours!!! But by spring next year I think it should be just about filled! Can’t wait.
Now for a few closer shots:
Barleria at the back, osteospurmum and torenia.
Angelonia serena and barleria.
Angelonia, hemigraphis and white scaevola – with some stray red salvia!
Osteospurmum and ixora at the back, sedum acre, calibrachoa and gazania front
Hemerocallis, celosia spicata and russelia at back, kalanchoe and wildflower seedlings in the middle and mesembryanthemum at front
Bracteantha bracteata and gazania.
Calibrachoa and turnea ulmifolia.

Bobg - I felt sorry for poor hubbie. It's long drive into the city to the nearest garden supply place and poor hubbie had to go in 3 times in the one day during all this - we'd both underestimated the number of blocks we'd need and then, of course, needed more when we decided to add the middle wall!

Thanks Tulsalady and Morgana - it's certainly starting to take shape now.

Beautiful garden! I like to watch it 'fill in' ...it's taken me about 10 years to get my 'lavender patch' the size it is! It only started with one plant.

Looking lovely already Bernieh, and will just get better and better, love seeing all your lovely plants, most I've never heard of and probably wouldn't grow here, but nice to see them growing in your garden.

Ha Bernieh, it sounds like me when I'm doing a job I go into great detail planning what I will need, only to underestimate and have to go get more stuff, my gates were a success as I did get the sums right for once. :o))

Thanks all - very kind.
Ian digs - of course hubbie got a great big thank you ... I think it went along the lines of .... Do you think you've got the estimate right this time ... darling?
Only joking ... I left the estimations up to him and as the plans changed he very obligingly kept going off to get more blocks. He's a sweetheart really!
Bobg - as I've said above, usually I leave the estimations of how much material will be needed to hubbie and he's always spot on, but this time WE (I stress the WE) kept changing our minds about how big the garden beds should be ... so it turned into a big, big day.

Thanks for the tour of your garden again, Bernieh. I love the before & after pictures as you can then see the progress made!
You have some lovely flowers there & the garden will soon take shape. Plants grow so quickly.

Thanks Balcony ... as long as everything in these new beds gets through the hot, humid summer that's on it's way, then I'll be happy.

Thanks Kimmy. Just had a look at your photos ... lots of potential. As you can see from my blog, most of us just go slowly ... little by little it gets there.

Your garden beds are like the colours of the rainbow. They're lovely.

I love that you do not go in for instant gardening, so often small plants take much better than bigger ones. I love it. The before and after pictures are so inspiring.

Madaboutplants - no I'm not the instant gardener type ... I'm more the try this out first, stand back and wait to see how it goes, then move on! I think lack of substantial finances just for gardening also has something to do with it .. Ha! This new area of garden beds is coming along very well ... but it's still very much a work in progress. I won't be doing much more just now ... will wait to see how everything that's already planted gets through our summer first!
