My little corner of the world.

Just a short blog about where I live.

My home city here in North Queensland is situated on a coastal plain. It is surrounded by hilly terrain to the east, south and west and faces the ocean (Cleveland Bay) and Magnetic Island to the north. (Magnetic Island is out of the shot – to the left).

This photo shows the view from Mt. Marlow (one of the surrounding hills to the west) looking east across the Town Common – which is a mangrove estuary area – over the coastline of Cleveland Bay towards Cape Cleveland and the tall mountain range at the back (that entire blue-looking range is located in Mount Elliott National Park).

In the middle of the photo above, you can see a large granite monolith (a big lump of rock) – this is named Castle Hill and rises 286 metres above sea level. Castle Hill is located in the middle of our inner city area and the CBD area is located behind that rock.

Now this shot is taken above the CBD – Central Business District – and you can see the Ross River flowing through that area.

At the bottom of the photo above, you can see the marina area and the part of our port area. You can also see the beginning of the long stretch of beach and all along this beachfront is a two-kilometre landscaped boulevard (one of my very early blogs was on this great area of our city).

This next photo is taken from Mt. Stuart (to the south) looking across residential suburbs, past Castle Hill and over to Magnetic Island just off the coastline.

You can see the CBD area to the right of the photo.

Now this photo was taken on top of Castle Hill looking to the east, across the marina and port area towards Cape Cleveland, just on sunrise.

This photo was taken down on The Strand area along our beachfront, looking towards Castle Hill.

Now you might be wondering where my property is. Well I’m going to go back to the original photo and show more of the eastern hills. If you cast your eye to the back of the photo where that long series of ranges are (all blue in this photo) … now look at the higher section of those ranges … well my place is tucked away on one of the lower hills in that section of the range. It’s around twenty kilometres outside the city, just off the highway that heads south.

That’s my little corner of the world.

What a wonderful place you live in. It all looks fresh and airy.
I remember the blog you wrote about the boulevard. I enjoyed that too.

Derekf - how did you know about Rattlesnake Island? Have you visited? I'm rather intrigued!

17 Nov, 2009

Claireinbude - no I haven't always lived here. I grew up in a small town further south which was surrounded by beaches. But I moved to this city to finish off my schooling and have been here ever since ...except for a short time when I lived down in our capital city, Brisbane, a few years back.

17 Nov, 2009

Heather - I'm also intrigued that you know the name of my city. I didn't mention it in the blog, so I'm guessing that you've been here or maybe live somewhere here in Oz?

17 Nov, 2009

Hywel - glad you saw the other blog ... I just love the Strand area of my city - I try to get down there as often as possible just to sit and stare at the ocean!

18 Nov, 2009

Thanks Pansypotter - yes we get a lot of blue-sky days here ... we average around 300 fine sunny days every year.

19 Nov, 2009

Lovely pics Bernieh, you are lucky! I'm stuck at work and feel even colder after looking at them. It's hard to imagine 300 sunny days a year..
My partner Derek comes from Nelsons Bay outside Sydney. We would like to visit his parents soon and get married there.

Annella - if you do make it downunder you'll certainly be visiting a great corner of Oz ... Sydney and it surrounds is a fantastic spot.

20 Nov, 2009

Thanks Mushy ... that second photo was taken from the 'Red Baron' seaplane which does tours around our city and over to Magnetic Island. I don't know if you ever saw the first Phantom movie with Billy Zane and Catherine Zeta-Jones ... but if you did you would remember the bright red sea plane from that movie.

That sounds fantastic (-:

Beautiful pictures Bernieh.Last January,my daughter and her best friend spent a month in Oz,as wanted to do something special before hitting 30,and settling down.Started in Brisbane, then up to Airlie beach, whit sunday Island,Hervey bay,Fraser island ,sydney, coogee bay, then onto Perth .Visited some lovely places, including the late Steve Irwin's zoo.Wonderful country.
We have a place called Castle hill here in our town too,but not as majestic as yours, but a lovely viewing place.Thank you for showing your home town.

23 Nov, 2009

Thanks for the tour =^..^=

Bloomer - your daughter certainly got to see lots of great spots ... Airlie and the Whitsundays are just drop dead gorgeous places. Our Castle Hill is exactly that ... it's a regularly viewing spot as it gives views to every corner of our region. Glad you enjoyed the photos.

You're most welcome Healerwitch!

Lovely place where you live, Bernieh! :-)

Your photo of the sunrise is absolutely stunning! For a second I thought it was a volcanic eruption!!!

There is a place called "Castle Hill" as well. It's just a little bump over the river where a Norman castle was built but it was destroyed a few years after it was built & nothing was ever built in its place. Later a beacon was built there as part of the defence chain spanning the whole country. Today a replica of the beacon stands there.

24 Nov, 2009

Glad you enjoyed the blog Balcony. Yes I was rather pleased with my sunrise shot - it was taken on top of Castle Hill ... great place to be as the sun's coming up. Sounds like Castle Hill is a popular place name - both Bloomer and yourself know of a place named that. Our Castle Hill never had a castle on it though ... nothing so grand as that around here.
