I have waited for this, for ages.It was a rescued Orchid, sitting forlornly on a reduction table at the GC centre last year.It had two stems, but this year only one..but at least its alive and well..It must have known I needed something cheery,on seeing the snow this morning..:o))

Maybe it liked being beside my 7 year old White one for company..!

I like to think so…

Thanks San.I love them, but I only have this window suitable for them, and it is only narrow,so no room for any more..sadly.:o(

Nice pictures, I have looked at orchids at my local GC and plant section at local supermarket, but never actually picked one up.

My Nan's neighbour used to love orchids and her house would be full of them. If she found one she didn't have or in a different colour, she would bring it home. I don't know what her husband made of it all though.

Ah, lovely! That's the same as the one I binned here this week in a fit of temper against all my orchids, none of which have grown at all or flowered for me this year. :( Not a happy orchid grower any more! Sticking to outdoor plants from now on!

Well rescued orchid...worth the wait I'd say! Your 7 year old orchid is certainly putting on a show too..it's beautiful.

what a lovely orchid-- I 'rescued ' one that was being thrown out and its full of buds now-- I wonder what colour it will be?

sandra do they have to be facing a certain direction , say ie" north, east etc, with you saying you only have this window for them

Thank you all for your lovely comments ,They are in a side north facing window in the lounge,so they are warm, with plenty natural light. When it gets warmer,I put them in dappled light in the conservatory, and if its really hot,I stand them outside in a shady place.,but bring them back in,early evening.Poor things never know where they are going to be..Lol.but it seems to work. Sorry some of you don't have any success with them,That's a shame,as they are lovely plants..The White one is very consistent,..one flower stem in the winter, and two in the summer..so around May,I will be watching out for it starting again..:o)
Spritzhenry did a very helpful blog called " Awkward Orchids"..Its very good.
hope you take a pic of yours Pam,when it opens ..It would be lovely to see it..

Its Spritz's blog that saved the orchids bacon ( if you know what i mean)--- since bringing the poor thing home and frantically asking Spritz how to save it I've aquired three more which are in full flower--- no room for more as the sitting room is quite small and I daren't move them!

That's good Pam,its a brilliant blog, and glad it helped you as well.I think we have to be patient with them after they finish flowering,as it can be ages before they decide when THEY want to flower again..I have never managed to get them to grow another stem, when I have tried cutting them back to a node, after flowering,it has always withered,so I cut it off.Have you managed it with your's?

20 Feb, 2011

I have never been able to coax orchids into reblooming, every time I try to cut them down they seem to die. Maybe I'm not patient enough either.

21 Feb, 2011

I've been trying to think when I cut mine down-- maybe august/september-- well before christmas at any rate!
I moved its position to a cooler room for a month and slowly-- really slowly--- a spike started to form ( much excitement) now its a fully grown spike with 6 buds that I can't wait to open \0/\0/\0/----

beautiful flowers ~ and photos
is there a radiator under the window that you have the orchids on?

21 Feb, 2011

I think thats the thing to do Lauram, just be patient.Sometimes you just have foliage for what seems like ages, and then all of a sudden,a tiny stem appears..its lovely when you know there will be more lovely flowers..

21 Feb, 2011

I cut mine down in late October,Pam,,and it started in late May.This is when it grows two stems, and at its best..it had 36 flowers but the year before,it had 42..honest!The second flowering started in December, and flowered in January, but only one stem, and 6 flowers..so hopefully, the best is yet to come again..:o)This is the white one,I am talking about,as the other is still quite young, and the flowers are smaller too.

Thank you Sticki, although it is a warm room, but its not near the radiator or gas fire,so they seem quite happy in the north facing side window...

21 Feb, 2011

thank you, mine is on a windowsill that faces north but there is a radiator under it ~ would it be better if i moved it?

21 Feb, 2011

I don't really know Sticki,as I'm no expert, maybe someone else will pick up on this ? It would be nice to know...
