Casablanca...part 2..

Seeing as it is a very cold wet day here,I thought you might like to see a bit more of Casablanca..in the sun!.A follow up to my ‘Come with me to the Casbah.’ blog.
We went next,to see the Hassan II Mosque, which is the largest religious monument in the world after Mecca..and a truly magnificent sight..On the drive through the city,we passed ’Rick’s bar’ from the film,‘Casablanca’..I only managed to get a side view, which didn’t really do it for me.. quite ordinary..but the frontage was more in keeping,..which was impossible to get a shot of,owing to traffic, and strong sunlight on the coach window.,so I was quite disappointed…sorry to those of you,who mentioned it,on the first blog…Our guide apologised for the myth of this place..as most the filming was done in a studio in America..so much for that, then…

Our first view of the Mosque..breathtaking,and so huge.
We felt like little ants in comparison, and the area around it,can hold 25,000 people !

The decorative tiling was awesome..and I loved the colours.

A little peek of the entrance..

We were surprised to see it was actually on the seafront, when we walked round the back..and the lights at the top, shine out over the sea for miles at night..and
therefore essential as a lighthouse..we could see it for a long time afterwards when we sailed away..We went a short drive to the beach area..another thing we.didn’t expect..A very big contrast in how they live here..The almost destitute fishermen and their families, crowded together in what can only be described as sheer poverty….and the other side of the road, all the expensive villas of the rich..with their fitness and leisure centres on their doostep, along with the numerous up market cars, complete with Chaffeurs, waiting for them..such a contrast..and very moving,to see such a difference in living conditions..

The beach itself is black volcanic sand..probably from the Canaries I imagine. The breakers were fantastic.. such power crashing on to the rocks..we stopped here for a while ,just watching :o)

Time now to go back into the city, for a short visit to a modern Cathedral, and hit the shops !..well,just the one shop actually..but our guide highly recommended it,as a good quality store with nice things to buy…so I will post the 3rd and last blog later..hope you have enjoyed a second trip around Casablanca..:o)

The architecture is amazing Bloomer, I`ve never been anywhere like that, not a traveller I`m afraid so appreciate your sharing.
They have created so many beautiful buildings and yet their history and way of life seems so full of cruelty in so many ways, bit hard to understand really...

Thanks Sheilar...A lot of them were..mainly the touristy places and special buildings..but the city itself,is a drivers nightmare..almost every road is dug up,as they are laying a tram line system throughout..cars and other transport just drive and park wherever.! our coach driver had to try about 6 times, just to get out of his parking spot..no one gives way..and all traffic signs are just invisible to a lot of them..but that is how it is..so they just accept it !..and lots of very poor areas ..saying that..it was still an unmissable experience..sorry to burst the bubble..I showed you the best bits ! :o)
I don't know what happened with some of my comments above..! I wanted to remove the replies I did seperately and add them altogether on one reply..so clicked 'edit' to remove them..it obviously didn't work ! just in case you were all wondering what the heck I was playing at ! Lol.

Glad you enjoyed it,Karen..will post the last part soon..There was also a trip to Marrakesh, but it was too far, although some did it ..3 hour journey each way !..we saw so much,as it was so near the port..

6 Dec, 2011

Looking forward to it, Bloomer! :))
We've been thinking about a two centre holiday in Marrakesh and Casablanca for quite a while...now we've met someone who has a place in the Atlas Mountains...

Too many places in the world still to see!!!!

Those are fantastic photos, Sandra ... thanks for showing them ... the intricate design is beautiful ... what a shame though that some people have all the luxury while others struggle to live day to day ... much the same in parts of The Algarve if my memory serves me well ... :o((

6 Dec, 2011

Lucky you,Karen.I hope you get to them all one day.:o)

Thanks Shirley..it's so different from other places we visited..so a nice experience..I agree about the poverty and the elite. all places have their downside..but some get more than their fair share..so glad I was lucky enough to be born here...however much we knock it, at times....
