The lost gardens of Heligan...part 1..

This was the highlight of our holiday last week ,while staying in Newquay,an ideal base for getting out and about, and easy to get to ,via the local bus…..It was much larger than I imagined,so naturally,I took lots of pics, and far too many for one blog….so sit back, and I hope you enjoy the first part..
Firstly, the woodland walk,to see all the beautiful
Rhodedendrons…
This variety was amazing…we had to duck,to walk underneath the low branches…and the bark had such lovely markings ….
we emerged back into the sunshine, and this lovely open space.so tranquil…..
Moving on to the first walled flower and veg gardens….
Loved these old Rhubarb forcing pots…
Sweet Williams en masse…
Brompton Stocks..(I think )
An archway of Apple blossom…
Keeping an eye on things :o)
The perfume from these wallflowers was wonderful..
Through to the Italian garden..
One of the Gardeners, filling this huge planter with crocks…not an easy task..
Well that’s it for this part..lots more to show you..and the “lost” walled garden…which is amazing…go and get a cuppa, before we do lots more walking…we had a coffee and a scone..naturally ! :o)

Thanks Karen..I loved the natural look of it all..and I could have stayed there much longer..so different from the Eden project, which we went to last year, and loved too...so that's both my ambitions realised :o)....

I went there a couple of years ago Sandra, its such a large space and so much to see, but I expect its better at this time of year. We went in October, so lots going over. But as you say, you need more time there I think. Glad you enjoyed your break. missed you.

Enjoyed your blog Bloomer, what beautiful gardens, love the Italian one.

Its ten years since we went and one particular rhodo stuck in my mind it was deep red 75 feet high and across.....it was brought back by victorian planthunters as a seed the size of a grain of sand......did you see that one Bloomer?
Mind its such an amazing place its impossible to see everything....

I can remember seeing the programmes when they were doing all the work and discovered the hidden gardens especially the glasshouses and the glades with the lakes, what they have done to restore the gardens is amazing, how they researched it all to get it right, I have the book which is very good as it tells all the history and the work involved from when they found what is now in my eyes a treasure.
We went when it was first opened to the public and I loved it, it was midsummer so its good to see your pics of all the blooms open, I`ve always wanted to go back, the whole area is lovely.
Enjoyed your blog Sandra and eagerly looking out for number two, lol, pleased you enjoyed yourself..

Thanks,ScotKat..it was a perfect day out,and not as hot down there as the rest of the country..in fact, very cloudy and thick sea fret,on the coast most of the week..! but inland was sunny and just right for walking about..we couldn't have done it otherwise,as it's so open, and not much shelter...
.................
Thanks Gattina..I loved those boots too..It's well worth a visit, and we didn't see all of it,as it is huge, but managed all the best bits..:o)
...............
Bless you for missing me,Cinders..:o) Glad you enjoyed it too.I suppose this was the best time to go,so much in flower. We had 4 hours there, but if we hadn't gone for a coffee first, and lunch later..we would have seen more..mind you,the food was excellent .:o)
.............
Thank you Pixi..if ever you get that way,you must go ,you would love it...Eden Project is also very near too..so
worth all the travelling down there..:o)
............
Thanks Jaykaty..The Italian garden was very pretty..so much info I could post about Heligan, but it would take me too long to do..you would be sick of the sight of it by then..:o)
.................
I think Russell has a pic of the red one,Pam..we took so many..I will check when doing part two...I have a feeling it was in the 'jungle area'..which was also amazing...glad you enjoyed your visit too :o)

Those will be in my next blog,Linclass..just wonderful how they restored the lost parts, isn't it? ..and tastefully too, keeping the character of the place..a lot of love and dedication there...It exceeded all my expectations...although I have seen it on TV too,it doesn't compare with the real thing..:o)

.................
Thank you,Carol, glad you enjoyed the pics..It's 23 years since we stayed in that area..nothing changed much, but we never went anywhere like this...kids don't do gardens ! Lol.
.....................
Hi Carole..We never expected to see such fine specimens as those lovely Rhodies..or as big..I did ask the gardener what he was going to plant,in that big pot,but he hadn't decided...or declined to tell Mrs Nosey.:o)...whoever could you be thinking of,re the scarecrow ? Lol...
