Visit to Hebden Bridge..

We decided to have day out via a lovely bus ride,to Hebden Bridge on Thursday,as it was warm and sunny,so ideal..For those of you who aren’t familiar with this small former Mill town,it is situated in the Calder valley, between Halifax,Haworth (Bronte country) and the Lancashire border to the west.
You may have seen all the devastation on the National news, with the severe floods they had,in June, and July..
when the river overflowed, and the streets were knee deep in foul smelling water, which severely damaged homes and businesses alike, and other towns in the area….The town is flanked by a river and a canal, and surrounded by steep hills..so the run off from those, was a big contributor..plus blocked drains and Culverts..
We were glad to see it looks to be back to how we remember it.but there are still some ongoing repairs to walls,etc..
This is a view looking up the river..looks so serene, doesn’t it?it’s hard to imagine how it raged through the streets..some rebuilding of a small wall here.and those houses were surely in the path of the torrent..

Lots of Ducks, being well fed by children..:o) You can see where the lower part of the bridge has been repointed and repaired.

Looking towards the Moors which lead to Haworth. Howarth…where are you,Heathcliffe? :o).

The centre of the small town..always busy, with tourists and walkers, with many specialist little shops..and how they need them,to help regenerate their businesses.

Time for a ‘small’ snack for lunch..Fish,chipe and proper mushy peas..none of the tinned stuff here :o) and no,I didn’t eat all those chips..about half was enough for me,but Russell managed his ok ! Lol

’waddling’back to the centre, and a lovely old restored mill, with it’s fantastic Chimney, and beautiful cladding.it now houses.a cafe and more little shops.

This plaque is on the mill chimney, next to another old stone bridge, over the river..a water wheel has also been installed,to help slow down the flow, should it happen again..I couldn’t get a photo of it,as it has been carefully screened behind trees..

Talking of trees, these are just starting to change colour, behind the car park..should look lovely in a couple of weeks..

The river as it is now..so low..I hope it stays that way over the coming year..they don’t deserve all that again..but it is and always has been prone to flooding over the years, due to it’s position..

I hope you enjoyed seeing a bit more of our Yorkshire walkabouts..

Thank you Kath,I only had a spoonful of Russell's peas,as I couldn't eat a portion of my own..We are so lucky to have all these places near to us..and with our free bus passes, even better. A huge County to explore :o)
I think we are going to Holmfirth this afternoon..'Last of the summer wine' town..a big food and drink event this weekend :o).only 30 minutes away from us..but in the opposite direction to this one..

Thanks for inviting me to join you and Russel in Hebden Bridge. I really enjoyed the trip.I love this little place, so many interesting shops and tasty cafes! I haven't had fish and chips for months, but I'm not keen on mushy peas, I prefer garden peas either tinned or frozen I don't mind.
Did you go into the Antique centre? I love browsing in there. :)

What a lovely day out. I saw your title and wondered where I knew from. Such devastation! I live near a river and it's my worse fear.
Thank you for sharing your pictures with us - fish tea looks very nice but no peas for me either but I would have managed all those chips ;)

You were very welcome,Waddy..a Yorkshire lass that doesn't like mushy peas? .You'll be telling me you don't like Yorkshire pudding next ! :o)It's a lovely little town, and no,we didn't go into the Antiques place,as it isn't really our thing, but we didn't go into many of the others either, as it was too nice to be indoors ...:o)by the way,I prefer my own mushy peas to be honest,as I don't like bicarb in mine..Emerald green doesn't do it for me ! lol.
............
Thank you Karen,I should imagine it's your kind of place, and I hope it is spared this year too..but they have picked themselves up,under dire circumstances..like most of them have had to do this year, all over the country..Glad you found some good fish and chips too..so satisfying when you just feel like some..and hard to find these days...
...........
I thought Harry would approve of the Fish and chips,Carole..he loves them, doesn't he? thank you for your nice comment..:o) I don't know if that mill has living accommodation or not,but it might well have,at the top..A lovely place to live for your nephew if it is..
..........
Thank you Terra..I had good material to photograph :o)
The weather was perfect..I didn't expect to be walking around in a tee shirt :o)
............
Thanks Neellan..the mill and chimney is my favourite too.so much history, isn't there? which I love..and especially the stone work we have around our region..Ok,you can pass on the peas..:o) .
..............
Oh dear,Scottish, another one who will pass on the peas !..you would have been very welcome to share my chips though,if you had got to them before my OH ! Lol.
Glad you enjoyed it,and I guess most remember the name of the town..if only for it's headline news at the time..I can imagine it must be a worry living near a river...
.........Another one who doeasn't want peas !

Sandra lovely blog. We've just spent 3 days in Yorkshire, and one of the places on our itinary, was Holmfirth. If I'd have known you were only 30 mins away, could have arranged to meet up.Didn't know which day we would be visiting there though.... it would have been nice to meet. I love mushy peas, can remember my mum doing them, I wouldnt eat mine unless they had mint sauce on tho!!fussy child that I was.

I seemed to have missed this blog, Sandra. I really enjoyed seeing it through your eyes, so to speak. I have never been there. It looks really pretty and it must be a constant worry to all those who live there ! Perhaps one of these days , we'll get to go to Yorkshire. The last time I was there , was when my children were young.

No problem,Rose,I miss a few as well..:o) Thanks,I'm glad you enjoyed our visit..and as it takes about an hour and a half,to drive from Brigg,it's a fair way..but if ever you decide to come over this way,you must let me know, and you would be very welcome..we would enjoy meeting up again sometime:o) xx
