THRILLING YET UNWELCOME VISITOR

Saw a mighty flapping of wings outside my office (tiny bedroom) window whilst on the computer. Luckily camera to hand. I always find herons a little spooky, I feel as though they’ve travelled through a time anomoly and can’t find their way back to the past.
There he is, on the back fence:

Zooming in

Zoom in more, need a new camers lol:-)

What’s he looking for? Hope he doesn’t notice my little pond

I felt quite relieved when he left:-)

Nor me lol A great visitor it probably saw your pond and came to investigate, hope you haven't fish, he may very well return!

Always amazes me that they come into built up areas.
I keep my pond covered at all times.
Great pics BA :-)

I usuallly put childrens windmills about, the flickering deters them, but the gales sadly destroyed the latest ones, the best was our resident pair of crows chasing him off, they chase the kestrel as well , I know what you mean about from another age....even their cry seems prehistoric!

The pigeon in your photos makes them extra-special ... really shows the difference in size !

Oh wow! Ive never seen one before :)

Excellent shots!

Amazing shots Ba . . . and amazing that the pigeon wasn't spooked. We often see a heron gliding across the field at the back, no doubt sussing out all the local garden ponds!

Goodness me you were so lucky to get these shots, I tried for years when we had our large pond, wonderful capture.

They say 'Birds of a feather flock together' and its true.
The Pigeon probably thought it was its great grand-dad.
Amazing how it wasnt scared of being attacked.

My mother used to go fishing, and always walked along the bank if there were children having a go. She used to instruct them how to take the hook out without hurting them, and say " They have little brains, and feel pain."

Magnificent as they are - I will tie a knot in the neck of the one who gobbled up my special Sarassa Comet I called 'Skinhead' due to him being gold except for a white patch on top of his head. This was years ago in Essex when I opened the back door and scared the heron off. A quick check of my tiny pond proved murder most foul had taken place! Apart from that - lovely pics, bornagain. Lucky you had your camera ready - I have so many memories of 'if only' moments when my camera was just too far away!

Thanks all for your comments:-) My computer desk is by the little bedroom...oops... office window, and my camera is always there too, well, unless I've put it down somewhere and can't find it lol. My pond is so green, he probably didn't notice it and there are only three largish goldfish in it although I haven't seen the third one since winter. Maybe when I manage to clear the algae or whatever it is I will see three. They have taken to resting at the top of the water, one has the tip of his lovely tail breaking the surface at times, so I do fear for them. They don't have names like my old was did 'cos it's rather upsetting when they die. My old ones used to come when I called them for food, these ones are just left to get on with it. I did stay at the window until he left, just in case though. As far as I know, they don't attack other birds and the wood pigeon was having a little bask in the sun, the dear thing was probably waiting until his bowels were full enough to leave a large deposit in on my slabs grrr:-))

Wow, what a fantastic picture. I've never seen one before. Perhaps you should think about covering your pond after you've cleared it, just incase he comes back.

Well taken,Ba..That Heron looks quite regal, surveying all around him/her ...Hope your fish were all ok..and it hasn't returned to take another look ! Although I would be delighted to see one on my fence, but then again,I have no pond or fish,so most unlikely..:o)

I think they are magnificent but would have a fit if one sat on my fence, I do know that if they can get at your fishpond they`ll come back until its empty, mine is always covered though, your pics are really good....

BA be carefull i have an heron which flew over since i can remember then one day my fishies were gone, i have a net now which i hate but needed.
Baz is going to make a frame with a net so that way when im in the garden i dont have to have the net frame on, only when we are in bed or out.
good luck, great looking birds though :o))

I haven't seen my fish for two days Sandra, hopefully it's due to cold weather although we have sunny intervals (I sound like a weather girl) The water is so green that I only see them when they're at the top. If they've been taken I shan't have any more, just keep it for plants and wildlife:-)

Amazing photos, Ba ... having the Pigeon in the pic really shows the size of the Heron ... the poor little Sparrows must think it's a giant of a bird ... :o(

He's been just about every day Shirley, he dropped down in next doors garden and was standing on the edge of their little pond. I stood on tip toe to see over their fence and clapped my hands and he flew off. I don't think they have fish now as their koi were taken a few years ago, just a wildlife pond now, but I wasn't taking any chances:-)

It's a different kind of neighbourhood watch for you, Ba! ... :o)

28 Apr, 2012

Lol Shirley...maybe I'm becoming a little obsessed:-)
