Recycled Bottles

Earlier in the week I was talking to Mark61 about recycling plastic bottles, and what had been done in Salisbury Cathedral as an exhibition. Pillars had been built in the Cloisters with plastic bottles. Well yesterday I went in to see this, and thought it was fantastic what had been done with them. There must have been about 50 pillars, the bottles are all filled with water and fibre optic leads put in each bottle. When it gets dusk the effect is beautiful as each pillar lights up. Unfortunately I couldnt wait till dusk, but have taken a picture from the newspaper to show the effect. Thought some of you might be interested.

Aren't they pretty? A nice addition to the stained glass too.

Yes, by all accounts it is very pretty when all lit up. Unfortunately it is all being dismantled today after several weeks.

A lovely effect. Very imaginative.
They can be a problem though. The beaches on the Saudie side of the Red Sea are just covered with them; they move in and out with the tide!
I put some elder flower champagne into two 2litre bottles last year, put them in the garden shed and forgot about them - - - a few days later we thought a bomb had gone off outside- could have been quite nasty!! Under statement!

Wow, as you say, that could have been nasty. , If only people would be a little more careful with them, instead of throwing them about.

Goodness thats brilliant! We are lucky, our council recycles plastic so we get a collection every week.

Our council collects fortnightly.

My OH was very good...before collections started, he used to walk to the nearest plastic bank with ours and our neighbours plastic.

Brilliant. Well done OH.

I wonder if someone decided to build a greenhouse out of them when the Cathedral took them down. It is a great bit of recycling.

Thats an idea ! I never heard what happened to them.
5 Apr, 2011
did the cathedral take them down or are they still there?
wouldnt mind trying to make one myself?! dont have enough bottles tho ~ perhaps i will make a bluehouse or a redhouse??
5 Apr, 2011
Sticki they were taken down by the artist that put them there as far as I know. Clever idea though wasnt it. Maybe you could start smaller and make a cold frame with some, you wouldnt need so many
5 Apr, 2011
its a really good idea i certainly agree ~ and even better they really look quite attractive.
did you see that clever font they have there?

Just come across this wonderful display of recycling or alternative use of plastic bottles. Thanks for showing us Cinderella. I see Driad remarked about the Red Sea Saudie coast covered in bottles. There is a huge area somewhere in The Pacific of floating plastic debris too. I use them in the soil for watering when we get dry, as we often do in Essex. Also for treating bindwood. We don't use many bottles. So I sneakily pick them up on the way to get the paper or go to the post. I wonder where they go when they are in the river near us? Anyway I'm doing my eccentric bit for recycling too.

Well done Dorjac, I think most of us gardeners use these bottles to a certain degree, they can be quite useful. But when you think how many there are the mind boggles what happens to them. This exhibition was quite something really, with fibre optics in each bottle it looked fantastic at night.
