This arrived from Amazon this lunch time its double the size of my old one, the frost got it this winter, was going to send old one to waterbutt heaven, but wondered if it would look ok cut down and planted up as it already as lots of drainage hole in it where the frost got to it. This new one was only £24 think it was a good price for the size of it.

Cindy i dont need to grow potatoes and veg as i have a friend with allotment and he's always giving me some, so will find some nice plant for it.
11 Mar, 2011
I was thinking Clarice wanted it for flowers but potatoes and veg sounds a great idea, now you will have to let us know what your going to plant in it Clarice,
11 Mar, 2011
Yorkshire it will definetly have flowers or something but not veg :o))
11 Mar, 2011

That is a great idea Clarice..looking forward to seeing it planted up..I have never ordered anything from the Internet, but may take a look at Amazon...not a very adventurous person, but maybe its time to start.

Well Done Carol you have got yourself a bargain there and like the idea of using your old one as a plant container;0)

I can imagine nasturtiums trailing over the edge of your old cut-down water butt, Clarice :)
Your new water butt looks a fine specimen....I've yet to source one for us but will be a good idea...we're on a water meter here so another reason to have one. I agree Amazon is a good place to get things at reasonable prices.

It looks more sturdy than most I ve seen and what a great idea using the other one for planting will look great.

good price carol ;o)
11 Mar, 2011
I agree, a very good price for it Clarice. I`d use the old water butt for a container, it would look really good. :o)
11 Mar, 2011
Yes I think t would be a good idea to cut the old one down, It will look nice with all plants in it :)

I decided i would put flowers in the old butt, but this morning one of my mates came round and came up with a good idea, if i cut it down just abit then make some holes in the sides, it would make a good strawberry planter, and also if i wait till about August they will give me some runners of their strawberry plants, and also give me the compost and horse manure to put init, i know i said i would'nt put veg init, but do fancy the idea of strawberry's in it, and i will stand it next to my greenhouse, so when its all done up it August i will take a photo and show you it done up.

That water butt looks great, Clarice. I still haven't replaced mine and have lost all the water from the two linked butts :(
12 Mar, 2011
Good luck with the straws, Clarice. Our council are selling butts next week quite cheaply - I think we will get another one for the greenhouse:)
12 Mar, 2011
i have one that comes of my shed and greenhouse. its suprising how quick i can empty them in summer.

I wonder if you will use the water butt without a base...I think I read somewhere it can be difficult if the tap is too close to the ground? Have you been able to get it in situ now, Clarice?
Your strawberry idea (especially with rich manure and soil etc.) sounds like a good plan. It will be good to see how it all comes out :)

I plan to copy your idea of using the damaged water butts for planters, Clarice, brilliant idea. I finally ordered 2 new butts from an internet company that was doing them half price although the stands weren't reduced! They arrived yesterday and my son in law is coming round at the weekend to help me get them in situ (and the old ones moved).
25 Mar, 2011
Do you find, Gee, that the stands are pretty much a necessity for the water butts? I have yet to get a water butt and have wondered about needing a stand as well.
Hope you get them in situ over the weekend...son-in-laws are a godsend for projects like that. :)
25 Mar, 2011
Some sort of stand is necessary so the tap can be used easily, Whistonlass, but some bricks and a paving slab would work just as well and might be cheaper :)
25 Mar, 2011
Aha....yes, it would work...what a good tip. Thanks Gee.
25 Mar, 2011
Have'nt got this butt fitted up yet, but having a porch thing taken down in a couple of weeks time, and i'm going to use some of the breezblocks for the bass.
26 Mar, 2011
Great bit of recycling, Clarice :)
26 Mar, 2011
:o))

My son in law has just left after sorting out my new water butts for me, bless him. He has also cut down the old ones so I can use them as planters. After rain this morning, the sun is now shining :)
26 Mar, 2011
Great Gee how far down have you cut them.
26 Mar, 2011
Just above half, Clarice, I am hoping to plant clematis in them, + sweet peas, etc. but I need to have my fence replaced first - expensive job although I am lucky that my son in law will do it for me.
26 Mar, 2011
This is great news, Gee....water butts in place and the old ones recycled to pots. They will look beautiful when planted up as you plan.
We've recently had two sides of our garden re-fenced (our neighbour shared the cost of one side, but the other neighbour said they couldn't afford to share the cost of fencing on their side). It is expensive as you say, Gee, and you are fortunate that your son-in-law is able to do the labour side of the installation. I hope it all goes to your plan so you can plant up your water butt tubs very soon. :)
26 Mar, 2011
Thanks Gee, i'm waiting till i've had a few jobs done in two weeks time, can't wait for it all to be done.
