August

So we have now moved into August and it seems the year is starting to rattle along now. As I had said before July was a good month regarding my wife Kim’s illness which in turn allowed me to go back to work for two weeks. It was a nice feeling being back at sea and we caught a nice bit of fish, which will no doubt put a smile on my bank managers face.
I arrived back home last Thursday and went straight into the garden and my first reaction was, where and have all these weeds come from and then there was all the flowers whose season was over, so the next day and a half was spent weeding, dead heading and cutting back. I think that i must have filled four recycling bags, the next step is to find an area in the garden to make a compost heap rather than the local recycling depot.
On the plus side it is dahlia time and I must admit to being a bit of a fan as you will probably gather by the photo’s. another nice thing was that we managed to have a belated birthday, social distanced bbq as I was away at sea for my own, a really lovely afternoon and evening and a bit of a funny head the next morning.
Anyway hope you like the photo’s

great blog, Davey! Your Dahlias are looking very nice! Your garden is also looking very beautiful!
I have some Dahlias I grew from seed last year & saved the tubers. This year they are now flowering again. For the moment I only have dark red single flowers. The seeds came free with the Gardener's World mag last year. They are called 'Bishop's Children'. There is one that has lighter green foliage than the others so hopefully it will turn out to be white or yellow.

I hope life continues on the up Davey. The photos are lovely. You have my respect for going to sea for a living....its my idea of hell on earth, I wouldnât even consider going out on a lobster boat!

Thank you all for your lovely comments, I think the garden has repaid us ten fold for the work that has gone into it, still learning a great deal about gardening, some of the main things being, take a register of all the names of plants that you put in and probably one of the most important, read about what your planting. Itâs a bit of a surprise when the little twig that you plant in the ground decides to grow 8 foot with a 3 foot spread in about the space of 6 months :) :)

I so enjoy your blogs because they have a rich honesty about them!
I am very pleased to hear that your wife has been better recently and that you were able to go back to sea.
Your photos are so lovely and you definitely have a way with dahlias! Glad you are back in control of your garden again!!

That's a brilliant garden Davey, and so nice to come home to, even if there was a lot of weeding to do. I'm with Karen over oats - a small rowing boat in a pond in the park is about my limit!

Your garden is so colourful, you have some lovely plants and all those beautiful dahlias are a sight to enjoy Davey, its a good year for them, although for the first time ever mine were smothered in blackfly, I treated them with my garlic douche before my flowers opened, thankfully it did the job, I don't like using an insect spray because of my fishpond and pets..
I'm pleased life is going well, it feels good to get back to a bit of normality after all the worrying, (well as much as one can this year)....long may that continue for both of you..
I've been gardening for over 60yrs and I'm still learning, my big mistake in recent years was planting a Sambucus in a silly place, I even read up on it first but still was amazed at how quickly it filled out..LOL..
Your photographs are stunning as always....

Hi Gerardine, according to my trusty or maybe not, dahlia id app on my phone that is the bud of dahlia Sherwood's Peach. When fully flowered it is photo no6. It really is a stunning dinner plate dahlia which I think I got from Sarah Raven. Last winter I covered that bit of ground with a compost mulch then a weekly feed of either tomato or liquid seaweed.
Thanks Lincs, the little mistake I made with the twig was the mallow tree, didn't do nothing last year but boy has it made up for it now, I don't really mind though as it is a beauty and has not stopped flowering since June.

Whatâs the name of the flower in your first photograph.its so pretty and delicate.
13 Aug, 2020
Hi Geradine, the flowers in the first shot are astrantia, which variety I do not know but you would find them if you googled astrantia flowers
13 Aug, 2020
I love all your plants Davey, especially the Dahlias! Do you have trouble with earwigs?
The Astrantia is a beauty. I always mean to buy some but never seem to find them when I want them!
Sorry to hear about your wife's illness and hope she continues to improve.
My hubby Rick was a trawlerman most of his working life until he had a bad accident at sea and is now partially disabled.
