Conifers Out & Border Reinstated

Some 20 years ago, we planted leylandii conifers on one of the boundaries for privacy, ermm probably not one of my better decisions, however, if kept trimmed and not allowed to get too tall, conifers are perfect for privacy but quite a bit of work attached. The length of bed is 70 feet so its taken a few weeks to achieve. Over the years the width of the conifers had increased so much and encroached further and further so basically there was just conifers and ferns.
This side of the garden is south facing and has beautiful soil too but we’ve just not had the time with other garden projects to deal with it until this summer plus, could I live without the privacy? The main reason the decision was made to reinstate the border was because its south facing and Siris advised me how to grow iris and their requirements and it was a no brainer, I had to have this bed cleared as a perfect spot for sun lovers with free draining soil.
I spoke to my neighbour about removing the trees on the proviso we had six foot fence instead and they agreed. So the work began, chainsaw out, trees down, lots of fires and lots and lots of tree roots to be dug out.
The fencers came and went and we attached a few trellis for the climbers. All was good until another day during more digging and clearing I hit plastic, called OH to investigate, and it was a small filled in fish pond and this had to be cleared of bricks and other rubbish. Thank you OH ?
Finally planting day came yay, over the months I’ve been collecting plants from my wishlist in readiness. Now the rest of the garden has been neglected lol.

Well done on a good job. The house I moved into had lots of conifers short and tall ( not Leylandii, though), and I personally am not keen on them. I took a couple out, but couldn't face taking the rest out, so I got my nephew to do it! He's cut them right down, I just have to dig the roots out and I'm looking forward to planning what I'm going to put there instead. It really has opened up the garden and given me lots of space to buy new plants!

Dawn that looks absolutely lovely, shame to waste an area that size on conifers.....as you say they look good if kept pruned, but they do widen with age, been there!! done that.
Looking forward to seeing it all planted up, you will have loads of room for the Iris!!

Thanks Diane, I agree a good job jobbed, a dreaded job tackled.
Lisam, well done to your nephew, it is a horrible task but we'll worth it. Happy planting.
Julia, I know what your saying, I'm planning for tall shrubs strategically placed to give privacy where needed.
Dotty, yep been there, done that sums it up.
I was less experienced when we planted them solely with privacy on my mind but at the end of the day neighbours don't really spend that much time upstairs, do they lol.
I've got a nice selection of plants already planted and more in mind.

The fences look nice. When your climbers get established it will look better than a green wall of conifers, and be less work too :)

That was a mammoth task - bet your glad it's done though. As Hywel says, it will be so much nicer to have the variety that plants will give you.

Wow, looks great. Enjoy all your new planting :-). End of next week I am having a conifer hedge taken out. Previous owners had planted it between the main lawn and veggie area and we have decided to have it removed to open up the garden and let more light in as we don't need it for privacy. Can't wait, one less hedge to trim :-).

Your garden looks lovely Dawn, and I like your fence,it will look great with your plants in.

Looks great, and the fence itself appears a feature. It was a shame to use a sunny spot with good soil on Lelandii.

I enjoy watching Charlie and the Rich Brothers transform an area. I just cant think what I would do with it.
Today was particularly good when they used varieties of Ferns and some old tree roots as a Stumpery. Very
effective. Always remember plants look more natural when inserted in front of a rock, or dead tree stump.

What a difference it makes! You have a lovely garden. Back in 2013 I too had 5 massive conifers removed and planted a wild life hedge instead, it was totally worth it. I found the hardest bit is to get the courage to chop these established beasts down, once they're gone you're in shock, panic stage 'what have I done?' and finally excited to plant something new! So it comes full circle!

Huge difference ! enjoy planting the new space .

Thanks everyone, I'm pleased we took the plunge, it is a bit scarey initially and lots of work but I don't regret it and a blank canvas, yay.
