Did You See Gardeners' World Last Night

What a treat, Carol visited Bodnant Gardens in North Wales to see the Winter garden and wow!

The colours were amazing. There was a lovely small Pinus mugo winter gold planted with a gorgeous white Erica carnea f. alba ‘Springwood White’.

A swathe of Bergenia Helen Dillon, beautiful maroon colour and a pretty Leucothoe curly red.

Various Cornus – orange stems of C midwinter fire, red stems of C alba Sibirica, black stems of C alba Kesselringii and limegreen stems of C flaviramea which was complemented by sitting with Euonymus fortunei ‘Silver Queen’.

Then there were 3 Acer × conspicuum ‘Phoenix’, so beautiful, so bright red.

There was a gorgeous Arbutus × andrachnoides tree with a stunning trunk and then a Ribes laurifolium which looked so nice.

Carol mentioned the fragrances of Daphne, Sarcococca and Hamamelis.

Alot of food for thought for winter interest.

Episode 2 is repeated again Sunday morning at 7.50am.

:-)

I too watched it and was amazed at the colours. This is their 'winter' garden, so does this mean it is less colourful during the summer?
Lots of food for thought though, the Cornus were really striking and the Ribes laurifolium amazing.

I wonder too about summer, maybe they have perennials to brighten it up, Carol mentioned they have 80 acres there so they probably just keep that area solely for winter interest. Lovely wasn't it.

No I didn't see it ! We have to endure sport (ie rugby) here on a Friday night :((((( The welsh are obsessed with sport ... and rugby :( I hate sport ... and I hate rugby !

They're allowing us to see G W tonight instead. How considerate of them !

17 Mar, 2018

Hywel, I'm amazed how sport takes precedence over scheduled programmes, so annoying especially when you settle down to watch a favourite programme then a match is on instead and worse still when the regular programme was on early and you've missed it lol

17 Mar, 2018

It always happens here on a Friday night Dawn. They're rugby mad !
Never mind, I can look forward to it tonight :)

Yes, it was just beautiful, and I would think they would leave the Winter garden as just that, with all that acreage to cover. I googled the Ribes laurifolium after, such delicately coloured flowers, they cover the bushes like a haze...if only I had a larger garden!!

17 Mar, 2018

I missed it Dawn, I will record it tomorrow, thank you, I didn'tknow it was repeated.

17 Mar, 2018

Callie, you're welcome. Hywel, you'll enjoy it, sorry I've spoilt the surprise though.
I fancy the Ribes too Janey and the light green Cornus.

17 Mar, 2018

No you haven't spoilt it. I shall enjoy it just the same :)

17 Mar, 2018

Really enjoyed it too. The white heather has stayed in my mind because it was so beautiful.
It really is a splendid garden in winter but I would imagine it is a lovely place to visit all year round.

17 Mar, 2018

Thanks Hywel :-)

I agree Wildrose, the white heather would brighten up our winter gardens without taking lots of room.

17 Mar, 2018

Glad you enjoyed your visit. I've been only in summer and there is a wonderful herbaceous border among other delights. We saw yellow wagtails in the stream too, but the pond was bare of life because otters had taken all the fish. Hope it has been restocked now!

17 Mar, 2018

I imagine it's a lovely place Stera.
Otters!! Omg like pesks

That Bodnant garden was absolutely stunning. It was definitely the highlight of the programme for me. I bet the whole gardening community shouted at Monty at the end when he said that hopefully next week spring would be that bit further on....I laughed ruefully! Its recorded a week ahead, so next week he will be back in snow again, poor Monty!

17 Mar, 2018

The rest of the programme was a bit bland but i guess they're limited at this time of year. Yes the winter garden was perfect Karen.

18 Mar, 2018

Saw it last night :)
I've never seen Jo Swift planting up tubs before.
Bodnant looks lovely, nice and colourful in springtime.

We went on a holiday to North Wales once, back in the 90s, and were going to see Bodnant while there, but the same morning there was a violent thunder storm and they'd closed it because it was flooded ! :(

18 Mar, 2018

Hywel, yes Joe Swift and pots, almost like they’d found him something to do. I usually put compost around each plant before placing another, maybe I’m doing it wrong.
Bodnant was lovely wasn’t it, pity it was flooded when you were in the area, typical.

We never miss a Gardeners World, was pleased to see the winter garden, because we grow all the Cornus mentioned,so wish we hadn't cut ours down so early now, the stems would have looked beautiful against the snow!! typical!! we have that beautiful Pinus Mugo with a mauve heather but I have to admit I prefer it planted with that gorgeous white one....
I was surprised to see Joe on pot duty, wasted talent.....
Monty garden was flooded badly, and today he has snow, quite a lot of snow!! looks very picturesque I have to say especially on the Yews!

18 Mar, 2018

I watched both last night , I think Joe and the camera man were feeling the cold as I got the impression he didn't finish topping his pot up, loved to see the Bodnant winter garden, I've been a few times but never in the winter, I would love to go at this time of the year, as you know I'm the gardener here, my usual drivers would need mega bribery to take me, lol..We went once when there were no fish in the ponds, they had been stolen but by poachers of the human kind, very sad as some were massive so must have been there for years...

18 Mar, 2018

I do the same as you Dawn - fill up with compost as I go along. It makes more sense to me ...

18 Mar, 2018

Know what you mean, Hywel, where football is concerned. Rugby is another matter!!

See Bodnant Gardens are closed today: SNOW!

18 Mar, 2018

Dotty, I remember you saying about your Cornus, the black and green are on my wishlist. The Pinus was very lovely too. I made the mistake of cutting my red stemmed willows down too early once, now I wait until I see leaf breaking, but who would have thought we would have snow in march.
Lucky you Lin, visiting Bodnant, you must go in winter, but not today as Eirlys says closed, lol.nStera said above otters had the fish.
Glad you agree Hywel.

18 Mar, 2018

I put compost round each plant also Dawn when doing my pots.I have just ordered the cornus, that was shown in the show,if mine look half that good,I will be very pleased.

18 Mar, 2018

I saw it. The garden was beautiful, and I've jotted some of the plants down to use in the future.

19 Mar, 2018

Which Cornus are you getting Callie?
I agree Lisam, it was a wonderful garden.

20 Mar, 2018

I highly recommend cornus ‘Baton Rouge’ it has the reddest stems i’ve ever seen.

21 Mar, 2018

I have ordered the cornus alba sibirica Dawn,Oh Karen I thought the one I ordered was the reddest stems, never mind I will have to sneak that one in also

21 Mar, 2018

The more the merrier Callie! I added 3 of Midwinter fire in the autumn. The thing is, I hate staking plants, and the Cornus make great ‘leaning posts’ for my herbaceous during the summer. Then, in the winter....they come into their own when the herbaceous are finished and gone. This is my theory...we’ll see how it works in practice! So far, so good.

21 Mar, 2018

That's sounds a good plan Karen,I have a lot of herbaceous plants also, and it will be lovely to have some colour in the winter months.

21 Mar, 2018

They are so useful Callie
