Ferns

I’ve always liked ferns but haven’t really bought many until recently, here are a few, most are too small to photograph and some I can’t find after a quick look round :-)

Oooh...looking great Dawn! I'm loving the shuttlecocks and I'm really happy to see your painted fern because I've tried to grow it three times and never managed to overwinter it. :)

I have 3 shuttlecocks together in another area, after seeing your pictures, but still tiny, it's they're first year. This is Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Metallicum' I'm relieved it's survived winter then.

as long as they don't get a late frost I find Athyrium are very happy and keep coming back year on year. they don't mind it being on the drier side.
the ferns are looking very good Dawn. Have you any harts tongue ones? they are natives and keep their foliage all winter too.

Love the painted one as well, I have one that keeps coming back
I've also have Harts tongues, just keep popping up in cracks and odd corners even I never tried for them

Maybe I will try a painted fern again some day. I don’t know why they fail...perhaps its because I expect them to!

Seaburn, yes I have a couple of harts tongue :-)
The Athyrium got a bit of frost tinge but I find the trees in the woodland shelter plants well on the whole.

Lovely Dawn! One of my favourite plants in the garden, I have to say. Love the pics, especially the one with the fronds unfurling next to the pond!

Some nice ones there Dawn , I have a few including the painted one but I'm so useless at remembering their names I stick there labels in a folder which doesn't help to know which is which when taking a photo .. Grrr ...

I know what you mean Amy, I've labelled mine but not with the full name so lots are Dryopteris and Polystichum

Hahaha Dotty, I'm easily sucked in to a new obsession, I love ferns, it's not all about flowers is it. I'm looking forward to seeing your fernery pictures.

for a really good fern nurseryman you cant go wrong with plants from Neil Timm of Binbrook Lincolnshire.

fernnursery.co.uk

he is a smashing chap with reasonably priced plants too. open to the public at the weekends if my memory serves.

There are so many different fern species. You have some nice ones. When I lived in the old cottage many small ones grew out of the stone walls. They were very pretty but I never knew their names.

Thanks Seaburn. They must have looked lovely Hywel.

8 May, 2019

They did. Some of them were very small and delicate looking.

Probably asplenium Hywel

Thanks, I've looked the name up and that's what they were. There were several different species but there's one I can't find. I'll have to look more carefully for it one day.

You’ll have to create a Asplenium corner Hywel, it’s nice having plants that hold memories:)

Yes that's right :)
