A few in the woodland today

The garden is frozen over but no frost in the woodland.
I’ve recently blogged about the woodland being weed ridden but you would not think so at this time of year, the leaves do a great job.
Here under the trees Herb Robert has appeared, keep or remove, what do you think?
Acer davidii George Forrest, snake bark maple
Lamium yellow archangel – Seaburn, as suggested and doing a great job

Lovely Dawn. It looks great. My Lords and Ladies has disappeared. :( If it were mine I would leave the Herb Robert. After all, its a native and its very pretty.

Lovely as ever Dawn, I would leave Robert !! Our Lord's and Ladies is popping up all over the place, I don't object to the variegated one, but not too keen on the plain green one...

I would like to crunch my way through those lovely trees on a frosty morning. It really does look very inviting.

Siris, the snake bark is attractive. I leave leaves too on the garden.
Karen, shame about your Arum.
Karen, Dotty thanks for your advice on Herb Robert, I'm impressed it's arrived. It's spreading well and I do need ground cover, there's a wild geranium I think appeared too, I'll find a photo.
Sorry to shatter the illusion Wild, it is still soggy after all the rain.

I too would leave 'Robert' as the stems are a glorious red when young, though they are a bit smelly. yes your archangel is doing its thing nicely.
that snake bark is stunning.

Thanks Seaburn, I was pleased to see herb Robert but wasn't sure, I've heard it pongs, is it the leaves? I feel quite pleased it's arrived uninvited. The archangel is doing exactly what I want it to :-)

Thank you

I'm glad your woodland is frost free, the trees probably shelter it. That's good - the plants look healthier.
I like the bark on that Acer davidii, it would make a lovely pattern on one of the clay pots I've made :)
I think the leaves of Herb Robert are very pretty. I always leave some in the odd corner or two. I like the dainty flowers too (as long as they don't spread too much !)
Does the Lamium spread a lot Dawn ? I have been thinking of getting some for a little wild corner I've got down the bottom of my garden.

yes it is the leaves that smell Dawn.
Hywel the Lamium does spread well and if left unchecked will take over. having said that they are easy to remove. If you'd like some I can send you a rooted piece.

Thanks Seaburn, it seems to make good ground cover, I'll put a peg on my nose. :-) I've post a picture of another plant that's appeared that I don't know what it is?
Yes Hywel, the pattern would look great on clay.
Yes this particular lamium is a spreader to the point of being a bit of a thug, like Seaburn says, it is easy to remove though. There are some lovely silver leaved ones that behave like L Beacon Silver.

I've never noticed Herb Robert smelling particularly - I'd leave it as its pretty and dainty. Your Arum is doing you proud - its a great plant. . That fern is a real beauty. I love ferns, and the evergreen ones are to treasure in the winter time.
Agree with Wildrose, that last photo is so very inviting - I want to go in there too...

You're more than welcome Stera :-)
I've never come across herb Robert, no idea how that got here, I'm pleased everyone thinks it's ok as it's hugging the ground nicely and blocking the weeds.
I've a few ferns now, I ordered popular ones not really knowing much about them and a few are evergreen and I agree, they are really lovely :-)

Thank you Dawn, I have a little corner for it where it won't be able to cause much harm.
Thanks you Seaburngirl, I'll send you a pm.

Dawn, re ferns, if you have a look at Long Acre Plants website they have quite a good list of ferns (and other goodies) and it says which are evergreen.

Thanks Stera :-)

Try Neil Timms Binnington for ferns. He is an excellent speaker and his ferns are very good. He gives excellent advice and he persuaded me against trying shuttlecock ferns as they wouldn't thrive for me. So a seller who wasn't just after my money.

What super bark on your Acer. Don't leaves do a great job of insulating the ground. I've left them in situ on my shady border, only removing them from the lawn.
