I missed this blog - glad I found it, though, Denise. We lived in Kent for over 30 years and this is so familiar to me. :-))

Glad you liked it Spritz we lived in Kent for twenty years and we cross the border most weeks.

My husband's parents lived near Tunbridge Wells, so we went through Tonbridge frequently!

We lived in a village near TW too.

It was Horsmonden. Denise.

I lived in Horsmonden Spritz on the Goudhurst road my children went to the primary school - small world

How strange! They loved it there. We thought it was a beautiful peaceful place to spend their retirement - in a bungalow in a small lane off the village green. Can't remember the name of the lane...

7 Apr, 2010

I bet it was either Fermandez Drive or Angley Court? Spritz.

7 Apr, 2010

Nope. I'm going to look at googlemaps and see what rings a bell! Back in a minute.

Furnace Lane!!!! Just along from the Methodist Church....:-))))

7 Apr, 2010

Of course, I had several friends who lived in Furnace lane, becomes a pretty lane that leads to a small lake where my son lost his toy car when he was about 3.

It's all coming back to me - the history of the area and the meaning of the 'den' endings of the villages!

7 Apr, 2010

I was told it meant pasture? The worlds first stomach pump was in vented in Horsmonden! and of course it hosts the Gypsy Horse Fair every year.

7 Apr, 2010

Oh yes - so it does! I think 'den' means a clearing in the forest/woods - and the ponds were all to do with the furnaces, weren't they.

Yes In 1600 it was the most important gun making area in Britain. John Brown's had a furnice which made cannons, legend has it that he sold to both sides in the Civil War. It employed over 200 workers at one time who lived and worked down Furnice Lane. Its also known for its hops and has a lot of Oast houses. The church is 2 miles away it was left behind because of the furnice and the workers needing to live near by.

Goodness - I'd forgotten the bit about selling to both sides! Thanks...it all brings back so many happy memories. :-)))
