Geat pic! Can you see two figures on the right side at the bottom? One of my friends who does a lot of fantasy art..paints figures into trees and rocks etc..they are amazing..reminds me of that :))))

Great pic, Karen. They look like they well pre-date everything around them and dominate the scene, as they should.

Useless at this, Pixi, as when the idea is instilled in my head, I look too hard, and end up seeing double....so, I can see 4 "fig"ures there, now. :-D)

Thank you everyone! It's an amazing fig or two maybe? It's in the gardens of the hotel we spent the weekend in - I can't wait to go back when everything's in full bloom!
Lol! I can't see them either...in this country I'm always looking for other things which might be lurking in such places! lol!

I can see them..like 2 figures entwined? ..or having a snog ! that's what it looks like to me..do I need my lenses changed.? :o))

Lol David!
Great Bloomer you see them! Reminds me of my painting..Lovers entwined together(forever) :)

6 Dec, 2011

Ha! They certainly would be if they got entwined in this tree....! :))

Karenfranceafrica:

Great photo! I have Ficus craterostoma which I have to keep in control...or it'll look like this ones. :>)

Is that what this one's called, Delonix? They do seem to grow fast...I've seen even small ones looking like bonsai versions of this.

I've got some sort of fig in the garden too - will post a pic and you can advise me what to do with it!!! :)

Karenfranceafrica:

Not sure which species this is...can't see the leaves. There's many Ficus species native to Africa. We do grow many Africa Ficus species here in San Diego. I have two large Ficus in my yard. The two larges ones are native to Africa. Ficus craterastoma is from southeast Africa and my really large Ficus cyathistipula is native to the Congo region.

Here's some of my Ficus pics:

They come in so many shapes and sizes, Delonix! I love the buttress roots on the strangler figs. I grow Ficus carica in France...the figs are delicious!

This one could well be F. cyathistipula, then as we are in the same neck of the woods as Congo?

13 Dec, 2011

Yes, there's hundreds of species of Ficus native from all over the tropical world. This one is not Ficus cyathistipula, though...the leaves are too small.

From what I can see the leaves look like F. retusa or benjamina. However, it could possibly be F. thonningii which is a native of the Congo region of Africa. F. thonningii, even here has lots of aerial roots...and becomes a very large tree.

13 Dec, 2011

i find it amazing that Ficus benjamina can get that big - I've only seen them as small and very temperamental houseplants before...! lol!

14 Dec, 2011

Ficus benjamina becomes a very, very, very large tree in the wet tropics. It can take over more than an acre of land with its aerial roots developing new trunks. I've seen one in Hilo, Hawaii which must have covered a couple of acres!

They grow large here in San Diego, however, they don't develop the large amount of aerial roots like in the wet tropics.

This photo is about the largest they grow here in California:

That is big!!! :)

Yes, many Ficus species become humongous! This is why they need to be strategically placed. I've seen the roots lift a whole foundation of a house, here in San Diego.

14 Dec, 2011

There's one around the corner here, which has completely incorporated a razor wired 10 ft wall!

15 Dec, 2011

I believe it! I know the damage Ficus tree can do.

Did you see this photo? This is a 80ft/25m plus tall Ficus elestica 'Decora' or Rubber tree about a mile from where I live.

Ahah - it's a pity they couldn't elasticate the fence and the driveway...or maybe you could say that it HAS been elasticated! lol!

16 Dec, 2011

Yes, that's true. lol! :>)

It's too bad this tree wasn't planted in a park or very large property. I hate to see these old, huge, and majestic trees cut down! :>(

Yes, or moved before it was too late... :(
