If you remember I was going to have our garden re-dug and the border ousted because after some 38 years things had become too much and I had lost my way in the garden. (its not that big I assure you!) but big enough to have become a problem.
I got hold of a man who loves his gardening who was and is willing to change things for the better for us. So I will show you how far we have got.

Oh, it does look a mess! :~(

New beginnings, out with the old!

The very old Spirea has gone along with a rampant honeysuckle and ghastly Ivy! Under this lot was that beautiful Hellebore I took a photo of and a delightful Harts tongue fern.
The next step was to dig the whole border out and this has taken hours and days, but we (the royal we!) are getting there!

The old tree stump has gone!!

Our pear tree was moved and it has been much happier in its new home. Loaded with blossom and hopefully will bear fruit.

Loads to do, define the border now, sow new grass seed along its edge and new fencing, also the bark path will go and be replaced and trees pruned heavily, in the meantime I am planting up, taking cuttings and am feeling much happier! More later. Bye for now.

I hope so TT, so long as the weeds dont grow!! :~)

If a few weeds grow, it will prove the soil is good...
... and they'll be easier to remove ...

added this to GoYpedia design ideas...
... work in progress..Lol. :o)

Always nice to have work in progress with an expert on hand. What is your pretty tree in the background? It has a lovely shape and colour!

17 Apr, 2011

Lovely Blog - love to see changes - especially when someone else is helping out as well. It will be great for you when it is all finished so much easier to keep tidy.

17 Apr, 2011

What a lot of hard work... but just look at the results! It's looking good!

17 Apr, 2011

Thank you friends. TT. thats nice to be on the design page!! Sheila. do you mean the pink blossomed tree? All I know is that it is a ornamental cherry which blooms in the middle of winter, but we think it is dying back :~( it may have to come out!
Thank you too Olive it is looking so nice now, I was afraid to make changes but now know how silly that was. there is a lot to do but its far easier knowing someone else will do the hard bit!
Thank you too Helen, I only have to make it pretty, Lol. Which is the best bit!!

Your Gardener friend as done a great job cutting back and digging out the over grown plants, all ready for you to start all over again, its like having a new garden, happy planting;0)

17 Apr, 2011

Grandmage, it looks super...like a new garden. And as you replace the fencing, get the borders in and established it is going to be wonderful. What a great friend to help you out with all that hard digging. It's a big job to tackle on your own.

I'll be watching out for updates as you make progress. :)
All ready for a summer to enjoy your space...how good will that be :)

17 Apr, 2011

Its looking miles better Grandmage, its going to be easier to keep on top of it. and prettier, I lost my way with my front garden, so we got the lot dug up and laid paving, walls etc and the new borders are easier to manage, im motivated.. keep up the good work .. Dee..

17 Apr, 2011

Oh grandmage, I'm feeling your border-digging pain! I've spent all weekend making a start on mine, digging up turf to create flowerbeds, digging the immensely clay soil and forking on muck!

17 Apr, 2011

Sk. forgot about your garden, when will they start that?
W.lass I couldnt have done it on my own, really, thats why I am feeling happy about it all, because I didnt have to do the heavy work!! Donna, I am not in pain honestly because I only had to watch as my big, tough gardener did all the donkey work, I couldnt have managed without him. Dee its funny isnt when you suddenly dont know what to do, being on GOY has given me encouragement, ideas and the love of friends spurred me on. :~)

17 Apr, 2011

Oh, what a relief! That is sooooo much prettier and more manageable now! Well supervised! I agree with Mum, it's great to see 'in progress' photos!

17 Apr, 2011

Anyway, all the best is yet to come..you will love planning your new garden..it will be so uplifting, and I bet you have already forgotten about the old stuff, thinking of the new.... .Lovely :o)

17 Apr, 2011

It looks so much better already, now the old overgrown things have gone you can plan exactly what it will look like. How wonderful to have someone do all the hard work then just come in at the end and do the fun stuff. Lots of lovely trips to the GC coming up methinks.....:o))

17 Apr, 2011

Wow it looks a different garden - what a great job of it - good weather to sit and enjoy it too

17 Apr, 2011

It looks much better already. It will be worth all the work in the end :o)

17 Apr, 2011

Dear Karen, 6d, Bloomer, Lily, Paul & Hywel, thanks for your encouragement, it was a very daunting task and I was scared (silly me) but each time I look out there I get a real thrill, we will sit outside and enjoy it, when it gets warmer, Lol. Bloomer you are right, I have not missed anything about the old at all!! I managed to save many plants as they were dug up and I re-planted each one and all looks fine, so far! I have got tons of space, Oh dear Hywel I will have to try your trick, plants falling in my trolley at Morries, Lol. !! The edging will be finished this week, then on to the fence. x

17 Apr, 2011

Good luck with it then.
Be careful of those falling plants lol.

18 Apr, 2011

know how you feel - I have been forced to move precious plants and trees for room - and it is a stressful time hoping they will survive. Also hat it will all look like - yours is great :):):)

18 Apr, 2011

Hywel I will be very careful, Lol and Paul thank you, long way to go yet, but it has got us talking and planning like mad!

18 Apr, 2011

I used to love deciding what to plant and where,Grandmage....you make a decision..and then change your mind,or move it ! Lol..I bet you will do the same, that's what gardeners do :o)

18 Apr, 2011

All the time Bloomer, I have shifted my little tree three times already and it is still in bloom!! and if I see a weed, well........... :~)

18 Apr, 2011

Well done GM for getting all those plants etc dug up - it's amazing what a bit of concentrated effort can do isn't it ? You'll find the extended lawn much easier than a border but I bet you'll miss it too in some ways. At least you'll have more time to spend in the garden.

18 Apr, 2011

Lol,Grandmage,I moved my Miscanthus Zebrina three times in the back garden...and now it lives happily in the long border at the front..looks better there too,so won't be moving it again..:o)..Weeds.? they wouldn't dare appear, would they? mine try and hide ,when I go outside,I'm sure..but not for long ! Lol.

18 Apr, 2011

What a difference, you must be delighted with the progress. I have been trying to make my own garden easier to manage too so know how you feel. Look forward to the next instalment :)

18 Apr, 2011

Lol Bloomer, bloomin weeds. Mariek, thank you, in fact the border seems much bigger now that it is empty!! we have just curved the border so thats why it needs grass seed on its edges, we are just making it tidier, less overgrown and hopefully easier to manage and Gee, the garden was beginning to worry me, but now I have found my 'man', I am not letting him go!!! Lol.

18 Apr, 2011

Looks great Grandmage already. Will look even lovelier when all your plants settle in.

18 Apr, 2011

Thank you & hope so Looloo, it is fun keep going to the GC too!!

19 Apr, 2011

A girl after my own heart, gc are ace places to visit and spend, especially if they have a little cafe attached, no wonder I never lose weight. lol.

19 Apr, 2011

Olive, we have just returned this morning from our local one after having had a full english!!!! Lol.

19 Apr, 2011

Oh wow wish I had been with you there, only get full english if I cook it. Glad you enjoyed it. What plants did you buy or did you just go for the full english lol.

19 Apr, 2011

Funny you should say that, we only went for the FE.!! Our GC give you vouchers for a B.O.G.O.F. breakfast so we make full use of it, today they had tables out amongst the plants it was wonderful! I did sneak a pot into the trolley on the way out though. Lol.

19 Apr, 2011

Love it!!

19 Apr, 2011

Well, what a change in your garden! It's looking so different since 'your man' has cleared away so much. You'd better treat HIM to a full English by the looks of all the work he's done so far. Will you be planting a mix of evergreens and perennials? : o )

19 Apr, 2011

Hi Shirley, I give my 'man' plenty of cuppas and that is all he requires, he brings his own sandwich, he is a gem. Not sure what to plant, I saved lots of plants and cuttings from the old border and I have bought a few new ones, I split the daylilies and Iris, so think I will wait now to see what develops. dont want to overdo it just yet!! However this will not stop me going to GC. just for a look, of course!!

20 Apr, 2011

Just mind those plants with the habit of jumping in your trolley . . . . .

20 Apr, 2011

Lol, remember Hywels blog? Hilarious!

20 Apr, 2011

: o ))))

21 Apr, 2011

That's looking terrific Grandmage! The curved border sounds lovely! It's great when someone else does the donkey work for you, then you can concentrate on the pretty bit! Remember when you're at the gc look for plants you can split up and plant now, they'll be well established by autumn, and if you get perennials, they'll just pop up again next year...with 'no bother'!! Oh, and I've found putting a 4-5 in mulch of fine bark really keeps the weeds down...so even more 'no bother'! I'm so happy you're all excited about your garden again, you'll have so much fun this summer! Maybe some bark will jump into your trolley! Sharp sand jumps into mine!
Oh!! and wasn't the Wedding just wonderful!! :~}

29 Apr, 2011

Thanks so Libet, I am excited about the garden but I want it all finished by 'yesterday' !, it seems to be going slowly and that is driving me mad. Still, I must learn to appreciate that things are done like that, I must not be always in a hurry, but I want to see results! My man is coming again this Monday so more will get done. Thanks for the tip about buying perennials, a very good one and more plants for free, at the moment I am waiting to see what grows, I have split the daylilies, I wonder if they will flower this year. I also found growing under the deck edge, seven baby ferns which I have oiked out and planted into soil and they are growing so well, at the gc. they cost £9.99 each!!!! Maybe some bark will pop into my trolley but I am going to need loads, I might wait until the autumn and this will also protect them through the winter. Libet I thought the wedding was such a beautiful day and didnt Kate look out of this world, that dress!!! Stunning.

I am quite an impatient gardener too,Grandmage..but as they say, everything comes to him/her who waits..! I have found it much easier to have more Perennials too,you can always fill gaps with bulbs or Annuals, till they get established. My long border tends to look a bit bare in between the spring stuff going over till the others grow again, but its not for long, and it looks almost full again now.I have planted some poppies at random ,at the back..but for the life of me,I can't remember which they are!!That will be a surprise..:o)I know they are either red ones,or seeds from last years pink frilly ones ..I just labelled the packet 'poppies' that will teach me to more specific..:o)...watch this space..

30 Apr, 2011

Bloomer when I see other peoples gardens all neat and tidy etc and full of flowers, it unsettles me and I want the same, but I know it will happen one day soon. You sound like me I put seeds into an envelope and say to myself now, they are marigolds or something else and when it comes to planting I havn't a clue whats in that envelope!!!! Thought I would remember, Lol. I like suprises! Just as well.! Cant wait to see your red/pink/orange poppies!!

30 Apr, 2011

Lol,Grandmage..you sound like every other gardener ..we always see something else that we would like,..usually on here ! I am looking forward to see which poppies I have planted too..:o))

30 Apr, 2011

Me too!!!!! Lol x

Thats a hard working man u got there. Yes love the flowering tree and that Hellebore looks beautiful. Such a lovely flower those. Wish they grew here.
Change is good but a lot of work but then if we had nothing to do we'd be board.
When we are done doing and getting we're dead.
