Walberswick cottage weekend.

We have just spent a wonderful weekend in Suffolk at a nice house in Walberswick, on the coast near Southwold. It was very cold and windy but the cottage had a huge log fire which we lit each day. We didnt really go far!! Lazy lot we are, but spent the time eating good home cooked food, drinking wine & beer (them, not me!) and chatting.(now, this is me!) We always used to holiday and weekend away with our friends but lately through illnesses (them, not us!) this has not been possible. That is why we enjoyed each others company sooooooo much. I only took a few photos, so at least this blog will be short. Lol.
The sea taken on Southwold pier.
The famous beach huts @ Southwold.
St. Andrews, Walberswick. This old part of the church is in ruins and dates back to the 1600’s. In its glory days it was huge which shows the wealth that the parish had at that time.
Inside the old church every pew had these embroidered kneelers, so lovingly sewn by the locals, it amazes me that with the door always open that these kneelers are still there! I thought the old pews needed some TLC. & varnish! Apparently Michael Palin lives in this village! I must say it is a very pretty part of the world.

had a much appreciated hot cuppa in the Southwold pier cafe last winter, the waves bashing into white horses on the rock barriers as me, family & grandson sat cosy inside after a wonderful off season walk . Its a nice place as long as you dont want to buy a beach-hut !! bit pricey LOL !!!!

Thank you TT, it made a lovely break for us all. Karen are you complaining, Lol?? and Bampy, its bloomin windy there isnt it? but refreshing. I love beach huts, something romantic about them! and yes I can imagine the price is probably like having a second mortgage, we had some crackin fish and chips in the cafe on the pier, very yummy, then went home to the fire and had cake!!

Love the pictures - my ideal place to live round these parts. Love to see the sea , so stress relieving

Gm, there is something very comforting about a real log fire when you're safe indoors and the wind is howling around outside! ... The foam off the waves at high tide this morning was being blown on to the road ... a rare event ... just looked at the prices of beach huts close to us ... starting from £9,000! ... Ridiculous price ... :o(

Not really, but I do love a good read! ;)

Glad you enjoyed your weekend in Suffolk, Grandmage. I too was in Suffolk at the weekend and spent part of Sunday afternoon in Southwold, visiting the Amber shop and browsing around. As you say, lovely area. I only saw the beach huts in the distance so was pleased to have a closer view :)

I love those pictures of the sea and the beach huts, looks a lovely place to spend a late autumn holiday, especially with log fires and good friends. The old ruins look an interesting place to walk around, so pleased you had such an enjoyable weekend;0))

I love old churches etc like this, and the location is wonderful. I'm pleased to hear you were able to have some time with your friends again .

You did brave the elements then? It was very cold on Saturday...but fish and chips, cake, and a roaring fire sounds good to me..Looks a pretty little place, and I've never heard of it before...I love going to Whitby on days like that..my favourite thing, watching waves when they are wild...at a safe distance !

It does not matter how many times you see the beach huts, they still look great and say "Holidays". Now GM if you had thought to put castors on your lovely new shed........
Do you think that is the appeal of those huts, that they remind us of our garden sheds and home...lol ?

LOVELY pics of the sea, and of the ruins Grandma - sounds like a great weekend! Michael Palin gets about - he apparently also has three houses knocked together in London (do you know the story of how he met his wife? on holiday as a teenager he saw this pretty girl on the beach in Suffolk (Southwold perhaps?), and went over to talk to her). Aaaww . . .

Lovely pics, love the beach huts. Sounds like you have a very refreshing time. There is nothing like the wind by the ocean for blowing the cobwebs out. It's very refreshing.

Hello lovely people, Paul, Shirley,Sheilar, Gee, Pp,, San, Hywel, B, Pim, Sheila & Anjie, I am amazed at your comments thank you so much, think we all have a bit of the old romantic in us and we all seem to love the old churches and beach huts! Gee how amazing that our paths crossed like that! B. I too love Whitby, my fave. all time place. Pim. perhaps I should paint our shed like a beach hut, would be so much cheaper. Sheila, I didnt know that story, his village is on the sea think I read it is a place of conservation, very nice houses there and you can only reach it by one road and its a no through village so quite secluded! Thanks again my Goy pals didnt expect many comments at all.! :~)

The way you've captured those waves makes me long for the sea. It sounds like a lovely place, and I'm glad you spent a while there. :)

We haven't been to Whitby for a couple of years now,Grandmage..so time to re visit ,maybe next year..we are fortunate enough to be able to go for the day.:o)The area was on a TV programme last night, with Gethin Jones..looking for Whitby jet and fossils....very interesting..
30 Nov, 2011
Ooh Bloomer - that sounds interesting. My OH loves fossils (no funny comments now), and I've often tried to persuade him to visit Whitby - perhaps now I can! Please could you give me the name of the TV prog??
Thank you!

Sorry Grandma, forgot to say how clever of M. Palin to find somewhere so inaccessible! I now want to go to Walberswick too!!
30 Nov, 2011
Hi B. last time we were in Whitby we stayed at the Royal on top of the hill on the harbour side, we loved going down to town each day taking a different route each time and I managed to get a pair of jet earrings out of OH! Sorry I missed that prog wonder if it is repeated? Sheila we always take our long weekends away with (rural retreats) they have great house/cottages/lighthouse cottages too. Take a peak online!
