Rescue Mission: Ugly Duckling

Friday morning started off as usual. With map in hand, my husband, first-born daughter and myself got in the car and began our venture into estate sales. You just never know when you might happen upon a treasure or, in my case, some forsaken little plant.

It was sitting all alone in a kitchen window and, yes, I knew it was a “holiday cacti,” (Zygocactus truncatus); but, I thought I had stumbled upon a new hybrid. After all, though a little dry, the leaves were actually red! So, I took it home and started my research. Alas, the color of the leaves pointed to symptomatic dehydration and sunburn! Of all things.

Next thing? Intensive care.

Waiting, watching, hoping, a little TLC and behold, it blessed my socks off! The ugly duckling recovered beautifully and turned out to be a beautiful swan, a treasure after all.

Great blog Hmhb, I've just one question, whats an estate sale?

23 Sep, 2009

Hmmm, an estate sale is liquidation of personal property for any number of reasons.

Some time after my daughter went to dental college I found one of these in her room tucked away in a corner. It hadn't been watered or fed for possibly a couple of months and was in the smallest pot imaginable, poor thing. It too was red (under the dust) but soon responded to a bit of TLC and grew on to be a lovely plant. It just goes to show that some things survive in spite of us. Yours looks very happy in that lovely pot. Gardening is so rewarding isn't it?

I keep hearing about these estate sales, they sound really good I would imagine they are similar to our car boot or garage sales, all fantastic places to pick up a bargain.I don't suppose you got the bowl there I like that.

Yes, I did get the bowl at one (yes garage sales); 50 cents (don't know how that translates into your money). They are such fun, especially with husband and daughter in tow.
