I was woken this morning at 3.25 am, by a strange sound , it was still dark and you know what its like when your half asleep.. i can hear a bird singing, no it cant be looked at the clock it was only 3.25 am…. am i dead i thought…. no i can still feel my body…lol….. is it Sky singing… it cant be i thought he doesnt wake up till its light and bright…. Has he died i thought… ( isnt it amazing what your brain thinks when your half asleep.) No i thought its outside but so near it sounds almost as if its in the room… now i was wide awake….. and realised it was a Robin singing… i looked outside but could not see it… it sang on and off for half an hour… by now i was wide awake and it took ages for me to get back to sleep…. Does anyone know why a bird should be singing in the dark… im sure it was a robin… havnt even seen or heard him about today either….
Love hearing him sing but not at 3.25 in the morning…..

Holly, were we used to live we had a Robin sing very early in the morning, I always heard him as my husband used to leave early not quite 3-25.

We had night warblers in a place I lived once. They tweeted and tweeted all through the early hours. I remember going out at 2am to try and see them. They were a nuisance lol you couldn't get back to sleep for ages :o(

Researchers claim urban birds have taken to singing at night because it is too noisy for their melodies to be heard during the daytime,

I was very surprised to hear birds chirping away all through the night when I worked at a plastic factory. I often had to go out into the "backyard" during my shift & when on the night shift (12 midnight till 8am) I heard the birds most nights of the year but could very rarely see any of them!

Hi Holly, how are you feeling, no doubt you've not been sleeping too well. We've heard the robin singing late at night, I believe they are marking their terriory running up to the breeding season, wonderful to hear.

They sing all night long by me Hywel as I live next to the grave yard and the street lights in the lane, they will normally sing where the street lights are, also its mateing time lol he who sings the loudest and longest shows strenth to the female to court as she will chose him as he shows he is strong for her to bare strong babies. A bit like its instinct for a woman to chose a rich or powerful man she thinks of her babies for the future, being well looked after lol.

there is a robin that sings near here quite late at night, its definitely dark but tesco express have bright lights and i think thats what makes him sing. perhaps there was a light on somewhere near you that made the bird sing holly?

We get woken at night by owls! There are several 'T'wit T'woo-ers' around most nights, as well as the 'electronic' Scops Owls beeping through the night. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz :o(

Hi Holly. It will, time is the great healer x

How strange you should write this blog, Holly, just after I heard night time singing too! I think it was a robin here but didn't actually see it. The flats for the elderly on the other side of the pond have left a light on recently so I guess that caused the confusion!
You must be feeling very flat just now. As others have said, time does heal and happier memories come to the fore. Thinking of you :)

OK: Move over Sir David Attenborough ....... Scops Owls are the smallest owls and like to live near (or in) buildings and they make a strange 'electronic-sounding' constant beep through the night. When I first heard one I thought something was wrong with the street lamp outside our casa, but then I happened to read about Scops Owls while I was trying to identify another bird and realised that I'd heard an owl. They are very difficult to see, due to being nocturnal and so small and I've yet to see one - but they are around. One day ...... Lesson over :o)

Robins are apparently the first to sing and the last to sing during a day, particulary when mating..so they are used to low levels of light..it can sometimes be triggered though by a strange noise..or artificial light..
