Spring in the park

I took a short cut through the park in a nearby town a few days ago.
It was lovely in the warm sunshine so I took some photos and thought I might show them.
There are beds of beautiful daffodils all over the park.
And this blossom tree smelled lovely. I don’t know what it is though.
Here is a closeup :-
There isn’t much in the park but there is this bandstand :o)
It was a nice short cut :D

Thats a grand place for a shortcut Hywel, the daffs and blossom look gorgeous and it all looks well maintained.
Our local Rec has a lovely victorian bandstand and couple of years back rumours got about that it was in danger of demolition due to cost of reburbishment, there was absolute uproar and we now have our bandstand all spruced up again........

You chose well, Hywel.....and as others have commented, it is a beautifully maintained park.
The blossom of the tree is really abundant....I wonder if anyone could identify it if you put up a photo in the questions section? Perhaps there are others who might not come across this blog.....just a thought :)

It might be a Prunus Avium, a white flowering cherry.

Thank you. I'm pleased everyone enjoyed the park.
Thanks Whistonlass I will do that.
Thanks for the name Scotsgran. It might be that. I have looked it on the google and it seems to be similar. I will take W.lass's suggestion aswell though just to make sure.

This looks such a nice 'quiet' park Hywel, though am sure that all changes in the summer...and bet, if you are anything like me, you don't go quite so often then !

It's in a town a few miles from where I live. I usually only go to the shops.
The park gets full of school kids at 3 o'clock lol

I thoroughly enjoyed this tour around the park Hywel its beautiful, that tree does look like the double white flowering cherry I have a pink weeping one with same clusters of flowers .

A lovely blog, Hywel. It's nice to see the cherry in bloom, now we know spring has arrived.

A really lovely walk Hywel and I love all the photos, but the ones of the bandstand are my favourites! Thank you! Do you think that tree might actually be a weeping pear (pyrus)?
26 Mar, 2011
The blossom looks lovely round here as well, also some amazing magnolia trees and mimosa in peoples gardens . Great photos Hywel, those daffodils are really uplifting for the spirit after a dreary long winter.

I did consider a pear Karen but after looking at both on the web I plumped for a cherry because of the bark. The flowers are very similar but the pear seems to have its leaves at the same time as the flowers whereas this seems to have just flowers at the moment. I think someone will be able to positively ID it for Hywel. Good idea to put it up as a question and put our minds at rest.
26 Mar, 2011
Yes Scotsgran, you are right, I googled pyrus and also noticed that the leaves seem to be on them with the flowers, so it has to be a cherry. My money is still on the autumn flowering one!

I'm dying to know what it is now Karen. With all the daffodils in the photos I thought it had to be recent ie Spring flowering. I did not know any of them flower in the autumn.

Prunus Subhirtella Autumnalis SG. I have one, mine is pink(PSA 'Rosea') and it is flowering now, as the winter was just too cold! But in the south they will start flowering in November if it is mild, and continue all through the winter in mild spells before doing the big full on flowering in March.

Top of the class then, Karen....good detective work. I am suitably impressed and it seems you could be spot on with naming Hywel's elusive tree :)
26 Mar, 2011
That is beautiful Karen. A bit of a misnomer though. Hywels one does look like a weeping tree.
26 Mar, 2011
Yes, it is SG, although I did ONCE have a few flowers in December. However, Spritz's seems to flower every autumn on queue, so perhaps it's not a misnomer at all, just named for the south!

I had P. autumnalis when I lived in the old cottage. It flowered from Nov to March every year.
I tried to bring cuttings here but they didn't catch.
