Anne Hoogendam

I thought Anne Hoogendam had died, but she hasn’t. She is quite alive and well :o)

I’m talking about a Fuchsia of course !

I bought her several years ago in a local Fuchsia nursery, which has now stopped selling Fuchsias, and only sells bedding plants,
so when I thought I’d lost Anne, I didn’t think I’d ever find her again.

However, I had some unlabelled cuttings in a cold frame, and one of them has recently flowered … and it’s Anne Hoogendam :)
I am so pleased :o)

She’s a rather delicate looking lady but must be quite tough because she’s been in the cold frame all winter, and although we didn’t have severe weather, it did get very cold on times.

I am going to take more cuttings of her now, to ensure her survival. I’ve never seen her in any other nursery, on line or in ‘real life’.
(I hope you know what I mean by that lol)

.

I bought this …

It was reduced to half price :)
and I thought it would do for my Fuchsias next year … or maybe something else … don’t know yet.

I’m going to put it here :-

So there’s a lot of clearing to do, and leveling the ground.
I’ll keep you updated on my (probably very slow) progress :)

Anne Hoogendam is looking grand

Gosh Hywel, its easy to see why you were upset when she died, she's gorgeous! You must have been cock a hoop when you discovered the cutting!
Have fun with your new greenhouse! One of those would blow away here...Will you Freecycle the plants you have to move out of the way?

I understand your joy, Hywel! It is wonderful when something bounces back from assumed extinction! I thought that I'd lost a wisteria to our strange winter..but I'm happy to say it's starting to climb the obelisk! slow start but whoopee! it's still with us!
We sure won't forget Anne Hoogendam on GoY! She's a beauty and well worth saving! Your little greenhouse will be an assurance of many more generations of AH... the only threat to the gh is windy weather. Anchor it down with cinder blocks or pavers!
I had a plastic shell gh when we lived in the north and it worked wonderfully.

I'm pleased for you too Hywel, she alive and kicking, a new baby. Your greenhouse will be perfect, might be worth pegging it down, not being condescending just talking from my daughter's experience in her garden ?

Blimey Hywel, I was scared to read on to begin with. I was relieved to find you were writing about a fuchsia, but I should have known. I can sympathise with your fears about the possible loss of Anne Hoogedam. I lost lots of fuchsias many years ago to vine weevils and I was devistated. I hope your cuttings are successful, she's beautiful.

What a lovely surprise to discover you hadn't lost her after all...I was also relieved it was a Fuchsia, and not a person !
I think you will have lots of success with your new greenhouse,Hywel..and like others have suggested, maybe try to secure it against windy weather...

Another very pretty fuschia.

this is such a pretty one. who is the real Anne Hoogendam though? do you know who [what she is known for that is] it is named after.

Thank you all for your comments about my plant and plastic greenhouse.

Seaburngirl ... I don't know who the 'human' Anne Hoogendam is. I have tried to find out but can't.
The plant was first grown by a breeder of the name de Groot in the Netherlands in 2008. I've found the names of the plants used as parents, but not who it was named after.

Lori ... I'm pleased to know your wisteria is all right and growing well :)

Sue ... I'm going to move the plants to different locations. I've got lots of spaces to fill.

Thanks for all your advice about the greenhouse,
it's going in a sheltered corner, but I am going to put concrete blocks inside it to help anchor it down.

What a beauty the fuchsia is What a good idea your greenhouse is. We were talking about gettinga second greenhouse as we have got rid of one of our sheds. It was really rotten. So I looked up on line and couldn't believe the cost. Don't know if you remember but having lost the one and only fuchsia I had last year I bought another one this year, Army Girl for a £1 from the supermarket. It was only small so I nursed it in the conservatory planning to plant it out once it had got bigger. Fathers day we went out for the day and hubby shut off the conservatory. It was such a hot day that when we got home, Army girl was in a dreadful state. Leaves all burnt and looking half dead. I thought she was a goner. I soaked her, cut off all the burnt leaves and planted her out. She seems to have survived and hubby even said that she is starting to look quite good now. All I need to do now is get her through the winter. If she makes it then I will think about getting some more, if she doesn't then I will give up and just admire all your beautiful ones. :-).

She is a pretty one, I'm going to try my hand at cuttings Hywel, I have quite a few now so figured its the time to try again, wish me luck, lol, I too was wondering where the name originated from. You'll have fun clearing the space and getting it ready for the g'house, fill those spaces we were on about before, we've had lots of rain this past three weeks so my plants put on a spurt which is good, my gaps gradually disappearing now....

It is a lovely variety, Hywel. Glad she turned up for you!

Lovely image of a very nice fuchsia. I looked up "Anne Hoogendam" on Google and all the posts led back to GOY and you, Hywel!

Thank you :)

I'm glad your Fuchsia has survived as well, Hywel! Anne Hoogendam is a beautiful Fuchsia!

I have a similar tale about a Lady as well! 'Lady Boothby' that is. Just like you I thought I had lost her & just like you I found I had a cutting, it's is now 1.5m high! The mother plant has also recovered & thrown up one stem that also has flowers - like her daughter. :-))

13 Aug, 2017

Thank you. Nice to know you still have Lady Boothby :)

14 Aug, 2017

Lady Boothby is now as tall as I am 1.60m! (5ft 6in) & she is still growing!

Today I took a few cutting, so as not to lose her this winter - even if she is supposed to be hardy.

17 Aug, 2017

You are the same height as me :) I have two recently acquired Lady Boothbys and hope to see them grow that tall next year.

18 Aug, 2017

I hope your new plants grow well for you, Hywel! ??

Believe it or not, but my plants grew that high in just 3 or 4 months!

18 Aug, 2017

Thanks. I've had them about a month and they've grown a foot already :) and there's a flower on one.

Jen I looked up Army girl and couldn't find it. I know there is Army Nurse as I used to have one. Did the label have the name of the nursery on it? Have a look at some pics of Army Nurse and see if its the same.
