A sunny autumn day

One lovely day in early November I visited a country park about half an hour’s drive from here. It is set in the beautiful valley of the river Tawe in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
I thought it would be nice to show some photos of it on this dreary night.

It is called ‘Craig y Nos’ (Rock of the Night) after a large house or ‘castle’ which stands by the road at the front of the park.

The original ‘old’ part of the building (right of the picture) was bought by an Italian opera singer called Madam Adelina Pati, in the 19th century – she fell in love with the place and wanted to live there.
She added the ‘newer’ Victorian block (left of the picture) later on.

The 40 acre park, originally the grounds of Craig y Nos castle, is now owned and managed by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

It comprises a lake and woodland walks, and the river Tawe runs through it.

A lovely blog Hywel, thankyou for adding the historical facts, I love these sort of places as you know, this house and its surroundings are stunning as shown in the photo's, I could spend hours there..... You picked a grand day for your outing, all the photographs are lovely, although I cannot paint they would make great jigsaw puzzles, my favourite for that would be the last one, the beautiful colours of the leaves in the foregound are specially attractive, can I use that please, I have a jigsaw app on my laptop that allows me to create my own from photo's, it passes away the time during the winters months xx...

Lovely place to visit, Hywel. Thank you for sharing this with us. Beautiful architecture, original and new. The lake and woodland are picture perfect too. I can see why the Signora wanted to live here.

Wow! Imagine living there. You would certainly need a groundsman or two. Did it have gardens Hywel? I'm imagining a good big veg plot and some fruit trees. Is the little building in the last picture a small landing stage? You would have to have a rowing boat if you lived there don't you think?

It didn't have gardens Sue, it was just woodlands and a lake.

The building in the last picture is the back of the castle, and it is big. It may look small because it's in the distance.
What you think is a landing stage is actually a bridge over the river.

What a lovely place Hywel! I am so pleased you shared this with us!
You are very lucky to have places like this not far from you and I loved the lake and the woodland walk.
The castle is just amazing! I also loved the story of the opera singer! Sounded so romantic.
Was you allowed in the castle?

Looks like you chose a beautiful day. Lovely, atmospheric photos.

Rose the castle is now a hotel. I don't know if the public are allowed inside. It is somewhat separate from the grounds and is only reached from the main road.
I went in many years ago to an antiques fair which was held there. That was a long time before it became a hotel.

Thank you Ange2
