Colouring up the winter ...

I’ve haven’t got much ‘winter interest’ in my garden so I thought I’d remedy that by getting some winter flowering shrubs. They’ll go nicely in some empty spaces.

I’ve sent for Mahonia ‘Sweet Winter’ which only grows to a meter in height, so suitable for my garden.
It has soft leaves, and fragrant flowers from November until March, so looking forward to seeing it next year :)

And also I’ve sent for Viburnum farreri ‘December Dwarf’ which is like Bodnantense but smaller, ultimate height about 1.5 metres so will fit nicely in my garden.

While I was at it I also ordered some Penstemons, some hardy Geraniums, and a Hepatica.
Not winter interest I know, but I ordered them anyway :D

A few weeks ago I bought a Clematis cirrhosa for winter flowers, and it’s waiting for me to get a big tub to plant it in.

Next winter should be more interesting here :)

Agree with Ange and Eileen. Lovely to be doing some ordering … I’d like to do the same, but there’s no room to look after plants before the time for planting 🙂.

Great idea, Hywel! I don't have room on the balcony for shrubs but your choice of them for winter colour is great!

Not the same one as yours, Hywel, but there are a number of great Mahonias around here that are flowering right now. I don't know if they are scented - I've never put my nose up close to them! 😆

In the gardens of the church here there are several plants of them that were probably planted not long after the church was built - getting on for 60 years now! And at the new community centre which opened a year or two ago nearby they have some very nice plants of Mahonia or "Oregon Grape" as they are also called.

I used to have the Viburnham B.D at Willow Cottage and thinking about getting another as I have one big tub with a dead shrub in it due to it getting so water logged and will go in there.
I also like the idea of the dwarf one too.
It is great to plan and buy now to give us something to look forward to.

Hywel I bet you really enjoyed ordering those lovely new plants. I think a winter clematis and a winter honeysuckle would be welcomed here.
It does give me a lot of pleasure to see the bulbs peeping through the soil.
Good luck with all your new purchases and please show them to us one day.
