Getting fruity in the garden!

Now GoY’s dont be getting to excited about the title, as you may or may not know I am a dedicated Freecycler. Freecycle is a web site where you can pass on useful items that you no longer need and can recieve things that someone else is finished with, all with the aim of keeping as much as possible out of the land fill.
Now today was a very good day for me as Carol had answered an offer for some fruit bushes and a very nice lady called Julia decided that we should be the ones to recieve them (from about 50 applicants! ! !).
So the following is how I planted them……………
Step 1) Put plants in water to soak………….
Step 2) Dig a hole…….( make sure its deep enough to take the roots without bending them!)
A quickie for Terra as she’s got a thing about footware
Step 3) Add plenty of goodies………. (chicken poo.)
Blood, fish and bone.
Step 4) Back fill with lots of lovely compost (3 X 70 ltr. for a tenner from B & Q)
Step 5) Firm down well (with the gardening deck shoes, I haven’t put another photo of them in as I didn’t want Terra to get to excited……)
Step 6) Give them a good ‘puddling in’ thats lots and lots of water to make sure the roots are in contact with the soil.
Step 7) Sit back and wait for the summer puds to hit the table…………….
I’m not sure if this is the ‘right’ way to do it but its my way and the way these went in. Lol

Very interesting blog. I have heard of Freecycle but have never tried it. I will take a look on the web. Thanks for the info.

Hi San, Its just brill, I repair/upgrade PC's and give them away on there and Carol has given lots of clothes which is always popular.
OB, sorry mate but you know that saying "who ate all the pies"? well it was written for me! ! !
Now I have a greenhouse (not up yet, blog to follow) I want to offer lots of seedlings on Freecycle.

Hi Gee, you do need a Yahoo ID to get on there but it's never been a problem as I never get any spam or any other Emails from them. In fact I don't think I've ever had an Email from them.

thats great ian and how kind of you to give so much to,do peeps see what you give them offer things you want? or do you just say if you like something
11 Sep, 2009
Well San, you can put an 'offer' in for something you don't need anymore or you can put a 'wanted' add in for something you need. For instance: I put 'wanted' adds in for PC's and then upgrade/repair them and put 'offer' adds in to give them to people. I have given four or five so far. I also make sure that any parts I can't use, like tiny hard drives etc. go to a proper recycling unit to be taken apart and recycled properly. :~))

Freecycle sounds like a wonderful thing Ian. They always say that one man's rubbish is another man's treasure don't they ? And all for NUFFINK !! Even better ! haha
Lovely blog Ian, I look forward to watching them grow.....and feel sure that some of the end result will be made into Indy's Fruit Cordial !!! LOL

i love all this recycling...i had to sign out of freecycle i was tempted by too much stuff..dineing table , windows for building a greenhouse, big old keyboard....julian got fed up of driving around the countryside picking the stuff up.....
my kids have spent the summer working (and enjoying) music festivals. when everybody leaves the 'TATTING' starts. tents, wellies, cookers, air beds, beer by the sackful...(who carries beer from the carpark to the camping areas and doesent drink it??????) sack trollies a wheel barrow and a watering can...im amazed at what people leave behind. they all have new coats, hoodies, and trainers. and so do i....well i washed it all i should have a share....;-))

Thanks all, Freecycle is brill, Mookins got me into it again when I was after a greenhouse. I didn't get one but I have had loads of stuff since. :~))
12 Sep, 2009
Sounds like a good idea, never tried freecycle myself..... im sure you planted your fruit trees just right....... what type of fruit are they..........
12 Sep, 2009
Morning Holly, there is gooseberry, red current and white current. Also more strawberries but they went into pots as they are ikkle baby ones and I wanted them to get some growth on before winter sets in. :~))

I'm sure those fruit bushes are going to be very happy in their new homes Ian, now that you've made them so comfy. Sometimes Freecyclers will lend you things too. I put in a wanted ad for a dressmakers dummy as I had to do some alterations to a friend's daughter's wedding dress. Nobody came forward to give me one but somebody offered to loan which was great. Job done and no dummy cluttering the place afterwards! Well there was one but we don't talk about HIM lol
12 Sep, 2009
Way to go Ian I can just smell your goosberry crumble.
12 Sep, 2009
That was good Lily, I've never heard of anyone Freecycling a loan before... Lol
I can't wait Drc........... dribble, slurp.

Your welcome Drc, much better than them ending up in the land fill. by the way if you get bogged down with emails you can receive them as a daily digest. Just edit your profile and down near the bottom is where you can choose.
Another convert Mookins, this is all your fault, you got me back into it :~))

Thanks for that Kat, I'll keep my eyes open.
15 Sep, 2009
Thanks Ian had 17 more so now changed it to daily digest.
15 Sep, 2009
They soon mount up Drc. :~))
15 Sep, 2009
They sure do - especially when you go away for a week and leave the setting!
I had over 450 to deal with today....hmmmm...
Never mind, Freecycle is a GREATuse of the net. Long may it continue!
15 Sep, 2009
Wow, and thats a big WOW, how did you cope with all of them?
15 Sep, 2009
I'm sure they'll do well next yr for you Ian.
Anyway if it works it must be the right way.
15 Sep, 2009
Cheers Hywel. :~))
15 Sep, 2009
Ian - I sat there and deleted all of them...tedious, but necessary as they were mostly out of date anyway.
16 Sep, 2009
Well all I can say is you have more stamina than I do. Well done you :~))
16 Sep, 2009
Spritz, I didn't go on for several months and there were over 7000, I started to delete but got fed up after doing 1000 so they're still there multiplying. I must get that setting changed Ian, you did tell me how to do it. Maybe they'll self destruct if I leave them long enough! LOL
16 Sep, 2009
OOOOHHHH!!!!!!! I can't imagine all that lot! To be perfectly honest, I've forgotten how to change the settings as well - IAN!! Where are you??
16 Sep, 2009
OK, here goes. Go to 'edit profile'. Go down to the bottom of the page and there are several choices, click on 'Daily digest'. Job done. :~))
16 Sep, 2009
Thanks Ian the daily digest seems to have stopped them none this morning.
