Hellebore and Hebe.

I popped in to a GC en route to visit my friend in Hornsea yesterday. It is actually right on the main road as you approach Sigglesthorne village. How could I not drive in to the car park?
I must admit, I struggled to find something..time of year I guess?
I did pick up a hellebore and a hebe. I love the drive over to coastal Hornsea, passing through quaintly named villages – Catwick, Withernwick, Sigglesthorne…I always think of autumn and Halloween when I approach the first two villages.
Anyway, I shall plant my new purchases up today, despite the bitter, icy cold wind! We won’t be out long! Still prepping the garden for new projects, bit by bit…

The first one is such a gorgeous colour Kate!

Oh thank you, Julia. That is good to know!
I didn't plant them today, it was so bitter and cold, we'd prepped some of the lawn for returfing and bagged lots of soil. So, tomorrow I plan to do it, fingers crossed it's not as icy cold!!!

Thanks Ange! That's kind. We're expanding the small lawn...the grass is taking back it's area! 😊
I've transplanted some shrubs to the birders side, getting rid of some of the lawn that just didn't thrive due to a laurel trees roots probably! So we're rejigging.
We're redoing the back patio later and the long wood wall along the front of the rockery..likely brick. Pics will follow later on 😊

Thanks kindly, Klahanie! Pleased you like. I was picking evergreens yesterday, I think time wasn't on my side either!
I was conscious of getting to my friends house.

Thank you, Rose! Pleased you like my purchase and colour 😊

Gosh it WAS an icy wind today wasn't it?
Love your choices of plants. Hope it warms up for you tomorrow!

Even in the height of summer the choices are very limited sadly. but if you want clothes or quaint pots etc then you are in luck all season. I remember when it was an independent.
Next door there is an alpine specialist and he was always worth a visit. Dont know if he was still trading.
As you drive through Catwick did you notice the doubly lucky/blessed sign? They didn't lose any men during both world wars. Not many places can say that.
It is a lovely drive isn't it. I did that for 4 years when I taught at Hornsea senior school.
love the markings on the hellebore Kate

They are two very nice plants, it's surprising what can be found even in the middle of winter :)

Thanks Chris, I do hope it’s less bitter today - the wind was so cutting! Fingers crossed 🤞

Thank you, Eileen. You’re right, like many of the big, new fancy GC’s - where you can buy just about everything - the plants aren’t the priority anymore…I’m not sure about the alpine specialist? I’ll have to have a look next time - thanks for the tip.
I always notice the ‘doubly thankful’ sign, it certainly is a blessing.
I didn’t realise you taught at Hornsea also! That would have been a very nice drive to and from work for you, especially in the milder months. I love the fact they have the gorgeous beach and promenade plus the really lovely Hornsea Mere’, which has a great walking and wildlife opportunity.

Thanks kindly, Hywel. I think if I’d had more time, I’d have probably come away with a couple more plants…next time! ;-D

Kate, your Hellebore colours made me think of a Coleus for some reason! Both your purchases look strong and healthy. I have stayed in all day today, too cold and windy to be outdoors . . . :o(

Great choices Kate … looks like the weather might be slightly milder this week. Happy planting!

I like these Kate, both pretty choices, I love Hebes and that one will be fabulous I'm sure!

Shirley, I do know what you mean! My Mum has coleus plants in pots and I’ve looked at the pics again and yes! Very similar. Thanks for your feedback..it’s been a blustery, bitterly cold weekend!

Thanks Sheila! Pleased you like! That is good to hear - I’m off on Thursday this week - car MOT, so I have 4 days off to hopefully get out there again in the garden! 😉

Thanks kindly, Janey! That is great to hear! I always seem to struggle with hebes, but, finally, the one I bought last summer is - fingers crossed - doing well! So, I bought another!

Kate, much calmer weather down here today so we dug out one of the two Zebra grasses. Thankfully it was easier than I thought, phew!

That's good to hear, Shirley! It was sunshine here today, made driving from patient to patient more pleasant!

Hooray!!

So pleased it is Kate, let's hope this new one enjoys your garden too..:)

Good luck with the reorganisation Kate! Hope the weather stays fine and dry for you. The Hellebore is amazing - never seen one like that before.

I second that hooray, Shirley! ☺️

Thank you, Sue, pleased you like! Yes, hoping I can carry on this week…once we all get started on things we do like to crack on, don’t we! I need to be looking at turf later on too.

There may not be much choice, but they look nice anyway! I shall be interested to hear of your fresh garden plans, Kate.
