My new houseplant

Stopped at the garden center on our way home from town to buy few primulas and winter pansies for my outside table on the deck.

To my surprise, their outside spaces were completely empty. They were closed for inventory for 2 weeks and their perennial area, including wines and rhododendrons and other such plants were not in their usual space. It looked weird. Although, they did have primulas , pansies and hellebore in front.

Despite the lack of their usual inventory outside their inside houseplant section was full of interesting plants.
I decided to buy one of them even though inside of our house is limited for new plant additions.
This was my choice: Calathea lancifolia (rattlesnake plant)
with long, elegant, ornamental foliage , wavy green leaves which are red underneath and an interesting brushstroke pattern resembling reptile skin.

It was recently reclassified to “Goeppertia insignis”

Native to the Brazil .
I understand this is not an easy houseplant to keep
No direct sunlight or otherwise it will lose the markings.
Needs high humidity, slightly moist or “damp”….. almost always but never “wet” and it generally won’t flower inside because its hard to get these conditions right.

Nice when looking down at them from above

Attractive red underside

Wish me luck and please, let me know if you have any experience with them.

We can compare notes, Klahanie. I bought one recently, too. It looks ok so far, but only a week!

my daughter has a similar one and she keeps it slightly dry and it is doing well. One that she kept damper died as it was probably just too damp.

I love the red under leaf. a very smart looking plant.

A beautiful plant,Klahanie,I love the colouring.I've never had one of these,as I cut back drastically on house plants, but I'm sure it will do well with your TLC.:o) .

It's a lovely plant. I've got a Calathea, and two close relatives, but never heard of this one.
Good luck !

dry-ish is better than wet-ish at least you can see drooping through lack of water where as rotting from too wet is always too late by the time it collapses.

I am a bit like Siris with house plants Klahanie!
Good luck with yours though, it's lovely.

It's a lovely purchase, Klahanie. I realised Ange and yourself have the same one - great minds!
Like the fact it's so attractive on the leaf top as well as the underside!
Best wishes with your new plant and hope it thrives for you 🤞

A lovely plant Klahanie. I love it’s spotted leaves. I wonder if it would like to be in a bathroom, if it needs humidity & not direct sunlight? Anyway, I do hope that it thrives for you.
