Clearing Up

I decided a good tidy up was in order this afternoon so I went round pulling up tired bedding plants and the few weeds that I found along the way. I`ve been very lucky this year as I`ve had so few weeds, apart from bindweed, which is a good thing because my back has been playing up lately and I didn`t want to aggravate it further. I think it all looks so much tidier now and the other plants have more room to breathe. I really must stay on top of things because we are off to Florida on Oct 1st and there is much to do before then, cleaning the greenhouse for one, not my favourite task I`m afraid but one that must be done. I also took cuttings from Pelagoniums and various Dianthus so I have lots of new plants for next year. I`m also going to collect seed from the Agapanthus when they are ready along with the Sweet Peas that are now in little brown envelopes all ready for next year.

My `Moneymaker` tomatoes just won`t ripen for whatever reason even though the other varieties are doing really well. Customers at work have told me about theirs so I`m not the only one. If nothing happens I`ll try my dad`s old method of wrapping them in newspaper and putting them in the airing cupboard, it worked very time.

Of course its a wonder that I have any sort of garden at all with a dog like Perry….he`s into everything and just loves newly dug over soil…well any soil really its just that you can see his huge paw marks when its fresh. I have to be careful he doesn`t see me plant anything new because unlike other dogs who might try to dig it up, Perry tries to eat them (he`ll try anything that fits in his mouth and that could just about be anything!) In fact the only things he won`t eat is the ever present bindweed which I mentioned earlier though it would be a great help and might even get rid of it altogether. Poor Perry, hes such a coward too, this morning while in the park he was chased by a young dachshund. Jim told me he turned tail and ran away….our great lump of a Labrador scared of one of the smallest dogs there is…lol!

Our lump of a Labrador. :o)

I took this photo last night and was pleased that it came out at all, I don`t usually have much luck with night photos with my camera.

Perry looks very handsome ,Ihave similar problems with Brynner cos he eats pebbles and shells from my beach area, actually he tries to eat lots of things, lol.
I always pop bananna skins in my greenhouse, the gas they emit encourages your toms to ripen......

Your 'night' pot looks beautiful - so does Perry, you can't beat a soft, great Labrador. Real 'Waggers' , every one.

My Agapanthus didn't flower this year. It was so pot bound at the beginning of the season I split it into two pots. The leaf looks great but no flower. I believe it likes to be crowded so I hope it will be better next year. They have put on a lot of growth! What do you think?

I wonder if it's more to do with being disturbed Linda, I have several all from being in a pot as it were, and they've never not flowered. Maybe it's because when they're planted out they have access to too much good soil and feel they don't need to flower' it's a mystery.

nice photo's.

Funny that,in the past my Agapanthus always did better in pots. Then I tried putting them in the ground with mixed success...the blue one has done alright but the white one has never flowered so I`ve dug it up and put it in a pot and hopefully it might flower next year. I was told by someone in the know that they like being pot bound.

I've no doubt that 'those in the know' are right as they always seem to flower when in pots, something to do with making sure that they seeds when soil is in short supply, but plants are meant to flower in the ground to, mine do. I find them pretty tough, almost a thug, and never feed them.

Hi there guys
I fed my Agapanthus when I split them. That will be why I have great leaves and no flowers. Along with, being upset about being disturbed, not being pot bound, and too much rain and not enough sun........ take your pick!!
