My Trees are Dying...

Sad isn`t it but I`m afraid it`s happening very quickly..
It started with the juniper about 4yrs ago, I cut out all the dead and it seems ok and is even sprouting new growth, however two others have succumbed and very quickly..
Hardly any green left..
The next one is nearly as bad, In fact from this angle in the pic it looks as though it doesn`t even have any branches..
This afternoon I have trimmed some of the lower branches to try and save the juniper, guess I have a lot of work to do..
However its not all bad..
The poppies have decided they have no wish to all look the same..
Why should they ? after all we don`t, lol..
Too wet to mow the lawns but at least I was able to potter around for a while, it felt good to be in the garden…

It's strange your trees going like that isn't it - there must be a reason (can't think of one though)

We have conifers in the front garden and they seem to be dying too, they look a mess! we will have to take them out...wondered if they have a disease of some kind.

Love that square of irises - that's inspired!
Sad about your trees, but there is a lot of lovely plants still.

As Oji says, you still have plenty else to enjoy . . . and yes, it's just good to get out there and have a potter, isn't it?

So sorry to hear of your trees dying, but the rest of the plants look lovely, I especially love the poppies.

I've got two mini conifers which are suddenly looking very unhappy too, despite having put on lots of new growth in Spring. Hmm...
Your poppies are gorgeous and I agree with Oj about the irises~ lovely idea.
Note to TT ( who very kindly sent me info about how to replace hyphens) ~ see how much I like the squiggle! The squiggle is the new hyphen/dash and you can make pretty patterns with it too!

I did see somewhere once about conifers getting this sort of damage, a lot of the time I think, if I remember rightly, they said it was the wind and rain and it sets them off and then disease creeps in it is unfortunate when they are this size as they have taken time to become so big and replacing them would cost a fortune. Have you googled reasons for conifer browning off like this it might come up with something for you. Or maybe one of the whizz kids on the question page would be able to answer a query on disease in conifers.
The rest of your garden is looking good though so as you say not all is bad. lol :o) love those poppies.

Nice to hear you were able to spend some time in the garden, but I'm sorry to hear about your trees. I hope you can save them. Your other plants look very nice ...

What a shame , horrid when you lose established trees and shrubs, pleased the rest of the garden is doing well....

Your garden looks great in the first pic and I almost don't see the damage because the rest looks so good. I read in one of my bonsai books that Juniper is prone to winter dieback..but recovers very well.

Thats weird sue sorry to hear about your trees-a few doors up from us have like a wall of conifers down their garden and a few week ago maybe longer i noticed (noseying at next doors lovely garden out of the top window as i do) a big brown patch, i thought was caused by them trimming them or something but in the last few weeks the patch has got bigger i wonder now if theyre all dying!?
maybe you could make the trunks into a feature with baskets or something like Gardengaggit did!
those poppies are amazing, and the square! :o)

So sorry to see the damage to your trees Sue. As already said, an added shame when they have reached such a good size, but the rest of the garden looks great!

It might be an idea to contact Kew Gardens, or an Arboratum where experts look after lots of different trees successfully.
I did write to Kew about a Primula Bullyama - thought I had a famous plant collector in the family - they wrote to me and said it is a district of Western China.
I would give them a try before removing these sick trees.

trees, trees :-((( , but the flowers are very pretty!

There are avenues of conifers in several places round here, usually lining long drives to big houses, and about a third of them will be appear to be dead or dying. We assumed it was this latest, particularly cold winter, but maybe there's something more sinister going on....
LL, I really like that group of irises - inspired.

You could try growing an evergreen wire vine Muehlenbeckia complexa Through the bigger conifer lincs.
It would improve it.

Thankyou all for your comments, I have checked out lots of pages searching for diseases and causes, gosh there are some big words on some of those pages, lol, I found the RHS pages to be most helpful and easiest to comprehend, I think its something called Pestalotipsis, the description of the way it appears sounds exactly to be right with the way mine have gone, I`m therefore hoping my prostrate Juniper will survive and possibly the one in the second pic, if I can diguise it and put up with its bare side, we shall see....
I do have more at the bottom of the garden and I am keeping a careful eye on them..
That clump of Irises was thinned out last autumn because it takes over very quickly as you can see by the pic, I don`t mind in that pond as its only for the wildlife..
Never heard of that one Pimpernel, will look it up, thanks..

Shame your Conifers are dying like that! I shall have to keep an eye on my three 6ft high golden Conifers on my balcony. Due to the very strong winds we have had I've moved them back up against the windows about 3 ft from the railings. As the balcony is only open at the front they get more protection from the winds.

Have googled any info regarding dying conifers and it`s possible that they have wind burn or they have been attacked by aphids, haven`t noticed any aphids on the trees though...

sorry about your trees sue, what a shame, i would say windburn to but not really sure, poppies are lovely :o))

Hi Sue ... I love your poppies :o)
Do you think your trees suffered from the very dry spells of recent years ?
