Decisions have to be made even when we don't like them....

The plum tree in our garden was okay in the springtime, had some blossom so I thought we would have plums this year, then a few weeks back the leaves started falling, I noticed branches on one side were dying..
I kept an eye on it, thinking perhaps I might be able to save it, ignore the baskets, I hung them there to try and cheer myself up whilst watching the tree gradually getting worse., the new growth was okay for a while but then all those leaves began to crinkle like the other side did..
Today I decided it had to go, I had room in my garden waste bin so no worries about getting rid of the rubbish, with hubby and his magic saw, (that one I’m not allowed to use) we cut the tree down, even managed to dig the trunk out, that was what you’d refer to as a job-n-half….Phew !!!
How about that !!!! my mini greenhouse saved the day yet again, accompanied by pots and three solar lights, they are to stop me tripping over the stakes that are holding the wire shelves in place once its dark, I have to go down there most nights to find Brynner, bless him he is going deaf, you can’t stand outside yelling your head off when ones neighbours are in bed can you….lol…..Now I need rain …

Sorry you lost your plum tree, you've done a good job with the re seeding tho'. Is Brynner a cat or a dog?

A job well done. Do you know why your tree died?

that was such a shame but you have done a brilliant job in its removal and seeding.

RIP plum tree.Such a pity. You'll surely miss it - hope you can plant another, possible in a different spot?

Thankyou Ff, it was hard work but well worth it...
I tend to forget some members won't know Brynner, he is our 11yr old Flatcoat Retriever Feverfew, we also have 3yr old Westie, Harriet, officially my daughters but as we live together she owns all of us, lol, proper little madam and spoilt rotten, Pepper is a Cairn/ Border Terrier, she is 4yrs old, came to live with me last Sept when my sister passed away, then there is Toffee , our ginger /white cat....

Grandad I looked online, I read so many things trying to find the cause and also to see if I could save it, think it was a fungal infection, the way it was described matched what was happening with our tree, advice was to remove it.....

Hi,
What a shame:(
I have a plum tree about 15 years old now. I noticed earlier in the year that the leaves on one small branch had completely died so I cut it off. I then noticed some dark amber coloured sap in various places on the branches of the tree. I did some research and all the indications were that it looked like Canker... oh no!!! So I went on line and I saw a video on YouTube where a guy fed his ailing plants with Hydrogen Peroxide, worth a try. So I bought a 3% solution (food grade) and in a 1:1 ratio I watered the tree with the whole bottle. I'm watching with trepidation but the seepage of sap has stopped and I've lost no more branches although a few leaves have fallen. I've even had some plums, so fingers crossed. I don't want to lose the tree as it looks lovely in my garden. We'll see...

My next door neighbour has a plum tree which has been left to grow out of control, and yep you guessed it , half of it grows over my garden. So this time of year we are blessed with a few kg of plum fall on the ground which I don't really want. I suppose it goes with their three cats who only seem to use our garden to do their business, normally in a spot of ground that I have just dug over. Our dopey newfoundland lily just sits there looking at them when they come visiting. Gonna have to have a severe talking to that dog :) :)

Traceylou I hope you have managed to save your tree, unfortunately mine was a rapid decline, when we cut it down there was evidence that it had reached the main trunk .....

Oh dear Davey, its really not fair to allow a tree to encroach over to a neighbour, some people just don't think about it though..
We've always had cats, only one left now and he wont come into the back garden since I adopted my late sisters terrier last Sept, she is a beggar, chases all cats and pigeons away, quite weird as she never bothers the doves or blackbirds, lol, at the same time new neighbours moved in with two yorkie terriers, poor Toffee lost his gardens completely and the opportunity to play with our other two dogs who he absolutely loves, I feel guilty about that, I know if he stuck up for himself Pepper would back off but he won't even attempt it, you need a water pistol or squirt the hose at said cats, I'd never condone hurting them but know from experience they don't like water....

Oh what a shame Lincslass. I wonder what the problem was in the first place? Nevertheless, you've done an amazing job of cutting it down, digging out the roots and reseeding the area. I hope you put your feet up afterwards with a rewarding glass (or two) :-)

Waddy the temps skyrocketed since that day, its too hot to even contemplate doing anything out there except watering, too much for me now I'm getting old, lol...

I am now feeling very sorry for Toffee. Does he get to go out at night when the dogs are in?
16 Aug, 2020
Toffee is fine Feverfew, he is indoors most nights, sleeps upstairs, we have safety gates everywhere so Pepper cannot get anywhere near him, in fact he is quite spoilt really, I just wish he was brave and would come into the back garden, I'm sure if he would do that Pepper would accept him like the other two do, when she first came to live with us we were worried how Pepper and Brynner would get along , he is now her best friend,it only took one week to sort, its funny to watch them really, when Toffee is inddors Pepper sits one side of the gate and Toffee is the other, they just sit and stare, she doesn't even bark at him now so we are making progress albeit slowly......
