Digging a drainage trench!

As some of you know I have been digging a drainage trench for one of our back lawns. Barry helped but I have soldiered on. It is as good as my back and shoulders have considered possible. Barry was only interested in the hole while I was interested in the grass. Here are some photos of our endeavours.

Blimey what an undertaking! I hope it proves it's worth and all that hard work gives you satisfaction. Well done. Makes my complaining about digging some holes for planting trees seem petty!

Well, as Scotsmanvic says.......we are due some rain so we will be testing it over the next few days. Fingers crossed Karen. It was quite an undertaking Honeysuckle and I have sat down in front of the TV this evening without moving a muscle, Stera. Phew!

I couldn't get my OH to dig a plant in Linda never mind dig a drainage ditch, That really is a great job not to mention saving money by not getting in some so called expert! that would have charged you a fortune.

I was doing that once on a former allotment. My son came by and said "Are you making it a Roman drain ?" I had to look it up, as didnt know what this was. You dig the small trench, fill it full of tree branches, so any water has easy drainage. ( They also go rotten.) So I did this. Two years later I forgot it was there and fell in it ! There was much swearing about the b....... Romans.

LoL Dianebulley never heard of the Roman drainage system need to look it up.

What a job Linda. I am sure it will make a big difference but keep us posted.

Well done Linda I hope this works for you. You should of got help from a TT soilder they are use to digging trenchs so this would of been easy for them..

The Roman trench sounds rather dangerous Diane.....not made to last like their walls. We put in broken bricks and gravel ( ten bags) then top soil. It was some job! Maybe I could get a job with the TT soldiers 3d. I will let you know how it goes.

Is that hair extensions?

You would think that branches would decay over time and cause the soil to collapse in on itself leaving an indention in the grass

Lol ? Linda that would be easier work I meant people who have their homes extended.

I agree Vic it seems pretty obvious to us. It is more like an animal trap. 3d you know I am only joking.

You certainly had your hands full digging a ditch like that! Now we see the finished job it looks so much better & now your lawn will never be waterlogged again! You may even have to water it during a heatwave now! :-D)) LOL!
2 May, 2016
Well you forget Balcony.......I live in Glasgow where we export water. Heatwave is a mythical word here.

just found this, Linda..what a massive job, and so neatly done! You go, girl! Your raised bed reminds me of my old garden..i really missed it for a few years, but i couldn't handle it now...

The garden is on a slope so the two lawns are linked by that flower bed which is packed with my favourite plants. The overflow is in pots. I watered the new turf yesterday......don't want the opposite problem. :0)
