Winter Flowering Bulbs

I started thinking about winter colour from bulbs a few weeks ago and today i had the opportunity to pop into a garden centre inbetween my jobs at work !!!

This was what i got

These are all 3 – 6" tall and will planted mostly in the front garden which is going to look a bit bare in the winter months.
That garden can get quite windy at this time so i choose the dwarfs purposely, i’m not keen on the taller bulbs anyway so it’s win-win :))
They’ll flower from February onwards so i’m hoping for a nice bit of colour out there then !

I grow Crocuses in clay pots on the railing of my balcony each year. I also grow Pansies or Violas in the same pots! The Crocuses flower before the Pansies or Violas & they then cover the unsightly leaves of the Crocuses. They obviously extent the interest in the pots for far longer than the Crocuses.

It's never too soon to start planning for next spring, is it? It felt pretty autumnal up here today, and I'm already thinking about the big autumn tidy up ( I said 'thinking' - which doesn't mean I'll actually get it done! )
I wish I could keep crocus, they're so lovely. The pheasants eat all mine! I plant a lot of miniature daffodils/narcissi, they flower earlier than the standards, last longer, are bomb-proof, the pheasants don't like them, and they don't blow over in the wind!
Love the scilla, and the pale yellow crocus, that's really pretty!

I love buying , planting, and looking at the winter/spring bulbs. I'm very fond of the dwarf ones aswsell so I like your choice very much.
I planted some bulbs yesterday, and today guess what - I'm going to buy more lol. - Can't wait.
I'm looking forward to seeing photos of all your bulbs in the spring Louise :o)

Hello Arsh :)
I don't have Iris reticulata, i have I histrioides 'Katharine Hodgkin' - a lovely blue colour. Not too fond of Hyacinths although their fragrance is nice.

How many of you have a greenhouse sitting empty all winter? Why not have a few pots of early bulbs in it to liven up the dark, wet days? Your bags of crocus will contain about 25 corms. So siphon off 3 or 5 and plant in a small pot and keep on the greenhouse staging. In late winter you will be able to shelter from the wind/snow/sleet/rain etc and admire them in comfort.
Both crocus and iris bulbs (reticulata types) are suitable for this treatment.

Just love those crocuses, you are lucky not to work in a garden centre, when new stock comes in it is sooooo tempting. In N.Z. we are now planting for the summer months, lilies, dahlias, gladiolis etc.Good gardening.
