A Change on my Patio

Three years ago the fence at the end of my patio was damaged in strong winds and although I tried to repair it, it was further damaged in another gale.

When I returned home from work shortly after, I found that my next door neighbour had built a ghastly cheap fence in its place in my garden.

I tried to hide the fence with plants and put up with it for two years, but decided I would replace it with a wall.

I designed the new wall and worked with my builder for two weeks, in the worst weather you could wish for (rain virtually every day), but after all this time, I am now very happy with the result.

Now that my mind is not too full, I am starting to become apprehensive about my NGS Open Day, anyway, I am a worrier but I am sure I will meet some very nice people.

I am very sorry not to have been in touch with my GOY friends, but I have been extreemly busy at work and in my garden, but hopefully I will have more time now.

Thank you all very much for your nice comments. Since I returned from France in March, my life has been very hectic and I didn't have much free time, but hopefully although I am still busy with work, I will have more time to socialise on GOY.

Fantastic Mossy, your neighbours are lucky they live next to you.
Do you have a date for the opening of your garden? I would love to come around, maybe message me with some info?

Thank you all again for the nice comments. It is good to hear from you again Funguy, my garden in Chigwell is open on 17th June and 21st July (hopefully it will not be pouring with rain).

30 May, 2012

Good Luck Mossy, not that you will need it as your garden is amazing what-ever the weather. I hope it stays dry though.

10 Jun, 2012

I think your garden is fantastic too, even in the rain. But for the 17th i wish you luck. My brother is opening his garden on the 17th!

Oh I do like your wall. It has a lovely mediterranean (spelling)? feel to it, which is possibly not all that surprising. You have made it look very warm and welcoming. I need to soften mine with plants etc, but as it is only just finished, that will take a bit of time - and money LOL
Well done, you have worked wonders. Jx

Once again, thank you all for your very nice comments, it was a long journey for me Jane, but it was worth it and I am sure it is the same for you. The choice of the stone is just right and I know your garden will be beautiful when it is completed.

Fabulous garden Mossy!

How has your garden fared with all the bad weather Mossy? ☂☂☂☂

13 Jul, 2012

The area where I live is very exposed and there has been quite a lot of damage, like most of peoples gardens. Because I have been out every morning and evening to do a few bits and pieces of in the garden, trimming etc., it is actually not possible to see any damage. I hope in North Yorkshire you have not been too affected.

13 Jul, 2012

Glad to hear not too much damage then. We have had a hell of a lot of rain and some of it, very heavy. Damage on 2 levels, the sheer force of the rain and the ensuing rot, as have had so few dry days for the last 2 months. Lost some plants (mostly annuals) and the blossom on other plants, but those will regenerate either next year or later this year if we get some sun. What an awful summer it's been. Even by British standards. Jx

13 Jul, 2012

I am glad the damage here has not been as bad as yours, especially as I have my NGS Open Day soon. I just hope we get some pro-longed sun. Anyway I return to France in a few weeks for the summer and I will be moaning about the heat and sun after a few days I am sure. Fx

14 Jul, 2012

Good luck with open day and.......................... don't moan too hard about the heat, just remember you will be coming back to more lovely English weather. lol.

16 Jul, 2012

Happy holidays Mossy, enjoy your break.

How could I possibly have missed this blog?
Fabrice, your garden is a beautiful source of inspiration, and if I lived a thousand miles closer, I'd have been there on your NGS open day, come rain or come shine. How did it go?
I was surprised to hear your neighbour put up a fence without consulting you: aren't people strange?

27 Jul, 2012

My two NGS Open Days went very well. Everyone who came were very nice and I made some good friends. I will have some more Open Days next year.

29 Jul, 2012

Will you let us know well in advance when they are to be, please, Fabrice? I might be able to organise my trips back to the UK so I can come a-visiting.

30 Jul, 2012

I had to,look back Mossy and yes, I remembered this. Beautiful wall, did your neighbours still keep the fence or did they go for the far more attractive other side of your wall..:))
Well, hasn't your garden grown into its space and how beautiful it is, you must be so proud Mossy. Have you still been opening for the NGS?
So pleased your back with GoY, I for one can't wait to see more of your garden. I did wonder if the hanging spheres in your garden now are bird nesters?

27 Jan, 2021

Hello Janey, thank you for your nice comments. The neighbours are extremely happy about the wall and it is actually better on their side as it is not as tall. The garden has matured over the years and am still opening for the NGS but could not last year, although we had several private visits last year. Keeping fingers crossed that I can open this year. I have met so many wonderful people through the openings and when I see what the charities are doing with the money the NGS make, I know it is well worth the effort. I have many hanging bird nests and wall and tree roosters, it's so wonderful to see the small birds going in and out and nesting in some of them.
