Erddig in Autumn

Late October a beautiful sunny Sunday so what better than a walk in the grounds of my nearest National Trust estate, I thought I would share the views with you.
Erddig Hall
Some of the trees in the grounds showing their Autumn shades
More colour beside the lake
Best of all for a splash of colour the avenue of pleached Limes
Love this mosaic of leaves backing the tall plant – it maybe Melianthus Major, if you recognize it please let me know!
Lovely to see Butterflies and Bees still active in the sunshine
There were lots of flowers adding colour to the gardens – I will start with Dahlias – gold….
….then yellow
Chrysanthemums too as you would expect
Hardy Fuchsias…
Dainty in pink…
Even in the borders
Agapanthus hanging on
Autumn Crocus amid the leaves
Heliotropium with it’s deep purple flowers and leaves looked rich in the border
In the wild woods lots for the children to explore…
ducks on the lake and fish to spot too
Hope you enjoyed the look around Erddig gardens – a delight to visit any time of year.

It looks quite sheltered - shows what a difference a big old wall can make. I've only been to Erddig once and my chief memory is seeing a grass snake swimming in a pond - don't remember any flowers at all after that! So thank you for the photos. Do you know what that tiny cute fuchsia in the border is?

Love, love Erdigg! Have been so many times with my kids, and now enjoy looking at the garden with gardening loving friends. Thank you for the lovely photo's.

Thank you Steragram, gosh I've not seen any grass snakes there in or out of the water - I'm glad to say, not surprised that was a lasting memory for you! sorry I don't know the name of the little fuchsia in the border, pleased you enjoyed my pictures. :o)

Yes, that is melianthus major in the photo. If you rub the leaves, you get a smell of peanuts!

Thank you Jane pleased you enjoyed the virtual visit I am sure you will enjoy your return visit, the Heliotrope was really striking such a deep colour :o)

I wondered if that was an Eel swimming in the lake ?
They are aquatic and overland creatures.
Also if the gardens are managed by volunteers ?
28 Oct, 2015
Thank you Andrew for confirming the name of the plant and for the additional note of interest - peanut scented leaves :)
Thank you Diane Steragram saw the creature in a pond so I don't know but have not heard there are eels in the area.
Volunteers do help in the garden and give guided walks also of course as guides in the house :)

Its absolutely amazing the financial value to us all of volunteers in this country. Gardens that provided cheap labour oportunities in Victorian times would be deserted wastes without volunteers nowadays.
God bless all Goyers who work as volunteers.
28 Oct, 2015
Thank you Diane I agree, my name has been on the volunteer waiting list at Erddig for ages but they apparently have sufficient people at present!

A Beautiful place and the avenue of limes is stunning. I hope the autumn colours continue for a while as they have been magnificent so far.

Thank you Wildrose, really lovely Autumn colours at the moment, a joy to see :o)

Diane it was definitely a grass snake, lovely coloured patterns and all shiny in the wet. It wasn't in the formal lake, there's a smaller pool in a wilder part that feeds into a stream and it was there.
