Heucheras and Autumnal Colour at Whiteswood

I was busy trimming and cleaning up and planting for some autumn colour yesterday and the day before. Thought you might like to see what it looks like now the summer is almost over. I am really pleased with the colours that are around in the garden. The new purchases of Heuchera are fabulous and help give it a different look along with the little cyclamen (not the hardy ones) in various colours, but they do add a touch of colour for this time of year, which all helps.

Heucheras first stop:

Hope you like them I love them.

Rosemary Bloom – the first one – has red flowers in summer

Can-Can – lots of lovely pinky purple leaves and lots of curls.

Prince – Beautiful colours

Bressingham Bronze – lovely bronze leaves as they are emerging

Beaujolias – much lighter and more pink/orange colours

Now for the rest of the garden colour:

Someone wrote the other day about berries being early on a bush and thinking that they would not last until Winter time, I haven’t seen Holly berries as red as early as this on this Holly bush before, rather strange isn’t it.

Photinia – Pink Marble, it is growing so well just hope it survives the winter.

Lastly because no doubt you are becoming tired now of the traipse around the garden:

Heucherella – Alabama Sunrise – I had forgotten it was in the border and it had started to be smothered and looked quite forlorn where I had it planted so I rescued her and put her into a pot I had spare – Thank goodness I found her in time she is now growing well, lovely lovely markings.

Hope you enjoy your Autumn colours as much as I am doing.

Happy Gardening Goy’ers!!!

Thank you both, it is so lovely today, the sun is shining and the colours are so pretty. The rain we had early on in the week has done a lot of good, even my oldest rhoddie has perked up a little, it thought of dying but has had a rethink. lol. Thank you so much for your lovely comments. They are much appreciated.

Lovely pictures Oliveoil, come on now spill the beans on this heuchera website :-), think we're all turning into heucheraholics on here, I've even been buying a few this year too, love you Can-Can really like the frilly ones.

Great set of photos Olive.
Heucheras seem to be THE plant this year. I love them all.

We are supposed to be having a heatwave this weekend - freaky!

the sun is out here!!!

14 Oct, 2011

It is lovely out in the garden, better than some of the days we had in the summer. The Heucheras have really got going now. Think the rain we had at beginning of week has done everything good. We had about 1 inch the most we have had since winter months.

Thank you Sticki, Frybo, Nana_d and Simbad glad you like the pictures and blog.

Enjoy your gardens while you can. x :o)

Gorgeous blog Mum, gone to my favourites. I am 'made up' that you have totally different heucheras to mine...lots of swapping next year!! Mind you, the first one is very like my 'lipstick' and 'Can Can' looks really similar to my 'Blackberry Jam'. The bronze one is super isn't it...great shape to the leaves on that one.

Your garden is really coming on now...much more all year round colour than you used to have...it's really looking lovely. It's funny but I often prefer gardens at this time of year, especially when you've just tidied and weeded and turned the soil, it all looks fresh and ready for the new season...not tired and overgrown like in September.

Right, I think I'll go and investigate my heucheras to see if there are any babies on the big ones! :)) Lovely blog....been missing your pics.

Thanks for showing your garden again Olive, it looks so good, I have Alabama Sunrise and it doesn`t seem to be coming on very well in my border, now you have me wondering if I ought to put it into a pot as well, see how she fares.
We also are having a beautiful day, been deadheading and raking leaves, the mower is away having surgery, lol, so made do with using my walkabout scarifier on my bottom lawn instead...
Lovely pics Olive...

Hi Lincslass..I have alabama too and it seems to prefer a pot to be honest. I have put one in the ground again and it doesn't seem to be quite as happy as the one in the pot.

14 Oct, 2011

Lincslass that sound like hard work, I never scarify my grass, it has to make do with whatever - cut it and that is about it. Pleased you like the garden pictures. Try Alabama in a pot I thought it was just me that had neglected it but it certainly is much better in the pot.

Karen swapsies sounds good, hopefully they will be strong enough to divide next year. They are good strong plants now but dare not do it just yet. I have some others - think I have Lipstick too, also Georgia Peach, Marmalade, and others which at the moment I cannot remember their names. do not think I have Blackberry Jam. I lost my Key Lime Pie one last year but will try and get another one next spring because I loved the colour of that one.

14 Oct, 2011

Hello Karen, its seems I will be putting her into a pot, its a lovely colour and I`d rather not lose her. thankyou...

14 Oct, 2011

You're very welcome. Mum, I had a look but no obvious way to split any yet. As you say....next year!

14 Oct, 2011

Something to look forward to over the winter months being able to split up plants and make more for free. lol. I have some self set aquilegia in the border looks like there might be dozens and I am going to plant them on into pots I have no idea what colour they are though, pot luck will be the name of the game. lol. have no idea which plant has thrown its seed down. Ah well always nice to have surprises isn't it.

14 Oct, 2011

My bottom lawn area is very shady Olive, also on clay, consquently I get a lot of moss, I made it worse a couple of years ago by using the chemical moss destroyer, ended up with lots of bare patches and after last winter even more moss than ever, I decided a scarifer was a must and have to say it is improving, on a nice day I don`t notice however hard the job is as long as its outside and not painting, lol...

14 Oct, 2011

I'm not a fan of heucheras but I would never say anything nasty about them to those who do like them

14 Oct, 2011

The garden is looking great Olive, the trellising has made such a difference - given it more definition. I love the Autumn look when the foliage is taking on its deeper hues, and that backdrop of trees, well what I would give for those.

14 Oct, 2011

Do you remember the lovely double pink aq. you sent me? I saved the seed and it has germinated in the greenhouse! I hope in the spring I will be able to send them out to people! :)) Lots of people admired my pics of that one!

14 Oct, 2011

You are so creative Olive and I love everything you show of your garden. I am starting to love Heucheras too so need to start buying a few more, and more and more...

14 Oct, 2011

What lovely Heucheras - and the rest of the garden looks great as well. :-)

I saw a new Heuchera in a magazine yesterday, and I'm watching out for it. It's called 'Encore'. I wonder if Vicky stocks it? Hmmmm...off to find out. ;-))

14 Oct, 2011

Your garden looks lovely....as usual Oliveoil :)
Your heucheras are all looking great. Love the pond and all the little nick nacks you have around the garden.
Don't you just hate it when you lose plants underneath others....but love it when you manage to find it on time and rescue them!!

14 Oct, 2011

Thanks everyone, yes it makes all the hard work worthwhile when the sunshines and you can see all your efforts looking so nice. Glad you like the little additions to the garden and the Heucheras I have not seen 'Encore' YET will google it later.

Glad your seeds have come up Karen, it will be interesting to see if they come true to their parent plant.

Stroller we have no choice in the trees the wood is all around the cottage well on three sides of it and at the moment the garden or parts of it are covered in leaves which is a bind but I shall get to grips with them later on when the trees have finished throwing them all off.

It is a pain having to tidy up the leaves but it is worth the hard work as I do love trees and have done since I was a little girl many moons ago. I used to know all the trees in the village where I was born and had an i.spy book to help me name them. Another on the down side of trees is when the wind blows you can hear it howling through the wood it is scary when that happens, I am always worried about falling trees. They are far enough away though not to do too much damage but I hate the thoughts of them falling.

Any way thanks everyone for looking and hope you enjoyed.

Thanks Scotkat, I love Heucheras just been looking at some in my Plum Tree border, no plum trees any more they are long gone but it still gets called that. Beaujolias is looking really good, really pink leaves at the moment and all the others look to have faired well over the winter so far. Hope we do not get too much cold now as it will spoil things, it has been so mild down here that the bulbs are well up and snowdrops are flowering already. Hope you are not getting too much bad weather up your end.

11 Jan, 2012

Thank you for looking and appreciating the garden it is nice when the sun shines and the garden has had its hair cut and trimmed. lol. I love the Heucheras - although I did lose some last winter when it was so snowy. Hope to get out there soon when the weather picks up and the frost has cleared the ground, much too cold here for gardening just yet. Nice to meet you Vicky all the best for the coming seasons. - Barbara (oliveoil)
