Amazing garden creatures!

The sun came out this morning and we decided to tidy up around the pond which was getting to the point where we couldn’t see the water!!!
First we disturbed this huge frog, so well camouflaged too!
Then Al found dragonfly larvae cases that they had hatched from. They are amazing.
And of course there were the dragonflies, just hatched , drying off on the bamboo, getting ready to fly away.We must have missed the hatching by about an hour I think.
I went to Utube and watched a couple of short time lapse films showing it, incredible!!!
I am taking the cases to school tomorrow to show my class, that should impress them! :))

Oh yes Pamg, we have those too, and red ones.
Clarice, it's all going on under our noses and so often these days we don't have time to appreciate it eh? Glad you are a wildlife friend too :))

Never mind impressing the kids...you've impressed me too! Have never seen these cases before and to be honest - I don't remember ever seeing a dragonfly in the flesh either!

Dragonflies and Damselflies are older than the Dinosaurs.
They have survived because they spend over 11 months of the year under water. So your specimen will need to go back to the pond within 2 weeks.

Hi Diane, this is its case after it has emerged, it does look like its still in there doesn't it?
My class were fascinated and I told them they were around at the time of the dinosaurs and one little boy said " cor, thats old then", ha ha he thought this one was 65 million years old I think!!
We watched the film of it emerging too and they thought it was weird and amazing at the same time! I am a great believer in educating children about the creatures around them and they love it too:))

The National Dragonfly Centre at Ramsey in the Fens is worth a visit. See website. Ruary is a great believer in Dragonflies, does courses during the summer. A good day out.
