Taking my camera outside to try and find something interesting to snap, I couldn't believe my luck in seeing this amazing Moth flitting around just above me. In and out of the Geraniums and Petunias, I've only ever seen them in warmer climes......WOW!

Such lovely comments! They are so like a Hummingbird in that they can even bend their tail down while they hover vertically.......theres a smashing film on Youtube of one in slow motion...........:o) So pleased you all like it......I was jumping up and down after snapping it!! Must have a look at Newfies now.................

You're right there Aster, I usually think that! Something must have told me to fetch it....:o) Thank you Oddbillie, I was really lucky!
7 Sep, 2009
Lovely pic. We've had lots of these in our small front garden on the dahlias and geraniums.
8 Sep, 2009
Ooh lucky you Lindak......:o) We were on holiday when I first saw one of these and really thought it was a Hummingbird, especially with the little bird face....:o)
8 Sep, 2009
How big was it Janey? are they about bumble bee size?
8 Sep, 2009
Hi, janey, I hope I haven't sent you on a wild goose chase because when I type in clearwing hummingbird moth, it says Newfies picture, click on that and can't find it. Possibly I'm doing something wrong (strange for me lol) but it was a beautiful photo and his wings in particular amazing:-)
8 Sep, 2009
Hi Ba.....I would say a little longer than a Bumble Bee, but not so wide......I've only ever seen them in flight and they are so quick and mobile its hard to judge. A lovely tail which is black and white spots. I found Newfies pic Ba..... a great close-up....and shows a different type to this one.....have a look on Youtube there is a film of one ......its great.....:o)
8 Sep, 2009
Will do Janey:-)
8 Sep, 2009
What a terrific shot - he almost looks like a 'fish' with wings!
9 Sep, 2009
Yes he does Fenclare....I bet you see a lot of these in Alicante where you are....:o)

We do get all sorts of weird and wonderful bugs (NOT including cockroaches) Geckos on the walls sunbathing of course, big grasshoppers sitting on plants (with striped eyes) My favourites though are Praying Mantis (bright green) and the little lizards which are an iridescent turquoise.
September is Dragonfly month too !
Chris.

Mmmm.....lovely creatures especially the little Gheckos........I remember the Dragonflies in September...we used to have some lavender terraces where tiny red and gold Dragonflies would come and land on the tips of the stalks.....:o)

Another brilliant photo, well done Janey. Gwen
11 Sep, 2009
Looks about the same as what I photographed, Janey..I never got as many comments, oh well, i must not be as popular as you. lol. But the hummingbird moth didn't care. lol.
11 Sep, 2009
Aw.....Newfie....yours was a stunning pic, a lot clearer than this one, I think they're different types do you? It hasn't been back, just one visit was enough.....Lol!
11 Sep, 2009
Hi Newfie, don't tell me you're catching my paranoia lol. Sometimes you can put a new photo on and get no comments at all! It depends a lot on when you download it, sometimes so many other people download immediately after you have that your pic is lost in the rush, that's what I tell myself anyway :-((
11 Sep, 2009
Bornagain...
All your pics. now have at least one comment and one "like" lol. :o) xxx
11 Sep, 2009
Thanks Tt:-))
11 Sep, 2009
:o)

They do look slightly different, Janey. Mine looked more yellow inbetween the lines on it's body. Only time I ever saw it, although that one hung around for quite sometime....I was scared at first! lol.
And bornagain, you're right. But if I was worried about popularity, in "real life" I would have shut my big trap a long time ago. But I haven't. :D

I lived in South West France for five years were these beautiful little moths were often to be seen flitting around the geraniums etc. I miss them now I live in the North West of England.
A beautiful shot that has bought back some very fond memories :-)
12 Sep, 2009
What a terrific shot Janey! A happy coincidence of being in the right place at the right time - AND having your camera handy!
13 Sep, 2009
Yours sounds like the Bee type Newfie.......I wonder if they get caught up in the warm air currents and are blown Northwards.......that reminds me we passed two beautiful Newfoundland dogs yesterday.....wow, they are gorgeous!
Thanks Gwen and Camomile, yes Bscott....a perfect moment!...:o)
13 Sep, 2009
I have a hummingbird moth on my pictures section, but it is very different from yours. Aren't they just beautiful creatures.
