Thanks Pasuki! the octagons were built by me and my loyal assistant aka Scott my husband! I'm not over keen on spending a lot of money on hard landscaping! Rather spend it on plants!

Yes have to agree with Pasuki ... after looking at the aerial shots ... it's a lovely design.

Very creative, where do you grow all these clematis?
24 Feb, 2010
Ah, well, wherever there is a tree, a shrub or a fence, there is a clematis! there are a couple scrambling over the ground as well but mostly I use the shrubs as hosts for them....and the fence!

this looks like a chelsea flower show section - really nicely thought out - peaceful looking also. Also, fab architectural feature on the right, errrm, think its, a Clothesinii Linus Lottus, or something like that anyway..... I have a similar one except mine hasnt passed the 'persilias white' test yet

lol! My linus lottus has now been removed!! No room for clothes any more....thinking of putting a pond there, so laundry is all getting hung up indoors. In any case, I waste tons of money re-washing laundry that got rained on, and I can't stand my laundry full of insects!....excuses, excuses....:))

Nice looking garden you have there. What is the structure on the nearest hard standing? It looks like a very small aviary.

It's a Chinese style Fire-Pit...thanks for your nice comments! :))

Wow that is a gorgeous garden, I love how you have done the gravel shapes especially
31 Oct, 2010
Thank you Paul! And a very warm welcome to gOY. I'm just about to add an evergreen shade garden....always changing it....they're never finished are they!
31 Oct, 2010
I know exactly what you mean - it becomes addictive to the extreme - I always see a new plant I want and new ideas - I thought I had finished the garden - however the grass on sloping areas is not doing too well - so changing it again to half grass half gravel garden , this is how I seen this picture for ideas on gravel gardens, it is very inspiring to see
31 Oct, 2010
Ah yes, the sloping problem. My garden raises by about a metre to the back. You can't see it on this pic. but it is quite sloping. The back octagon is raised up higher than the front one with a small step in between. We used sleepers to make the boundary.
31 Oct, 2010
Well I took the grass up where it was sloping and it was an awful smell - the grass had not rooted - I then found out just 6 inches down was bricks and all kinds of rubble - anyway gravelled it today and looks nice I think. I do love the shapes you have done in your garden too

Are you like me then Paul? New build?

Sorry for the delay in answering - Yes I do often change garden - and I think this time maybe the last time - maybe ? :D

I think I'm staying put for a while too! We lived in our last house, which was our first house, for 18 years!

Thanks Woker:)

You built those Octagons yourself??? Wow! I want (some) or even one of those but how!
26 Sep, 2013
Well Gorgeousma... level your ground first...then you need some railway sleepers. Make sure they are proper substantial ones, not the lightweight efforts you get in the GC. These ones are 4' in length I think. Then it's all about angles.....each one set at the correct angle to get the completed 'circle', and a spirit level with some rough sand to get them properly level. Then you need some brackets to join them together to prevent them slipping...and voila...permeable membrane and gravel complete the look. Tt takes a bit of patience and a little bit of maths...but you can do it! You'll need a helper. :)
