Finally, the first bloom. This toad lily is the hybrid between the Japanese toad lily (Tricyrtis hirta) and Taiwan toad lily (Rricyrtis stolonifera).

This one is definitely heat and humidity hardy over here, Bjs ... and as far as I know it is also cold hardy to temps. around -5 degrees F. Maybe others would know a bit more.

Thanks Pottygardener, Amy, BB, Delonix and Neellan ... thanks for your comments.
Neellan, it's hard to find out exactly where the common name originated ... but it's believed that the name refers to the spots this flower has ... it's spotted like a toad! I'm not sure which toad has lovely spots like this ... but hey! what do I know.

I've not seen a purple toad either ! it just doesn't seem to do such a beautiful flower justice lol

I have just planted some toad lily corms and seeing your description I realise they are in exactly the right pace, very hopeful they will grow as lovely as yours!

Missusi, they really are the most fabulous plant. Mine is just about to burst into bloom again ... obviously still a young plant, but it's growing nicely.
