The not-so-squirrel-proof bird feeder

Meanwhile another squirrel sat on the bird table, another dug in the flower pots and a fourth ran across the fence!

18 Feb, 2012

18 Feb, 2012

Hi i would love squirrels on my bird box all i get is cats.At least with squirrels they dont eat the birds.

very nice picture , very cute :)

18 Feb, 2012

thanks mark! the cat has been on the bird table too!!

birds are safe from squirrels but they dont always get many peanuts here!!

18 Feb, 2012

Thats true the birds wont get much food from the feeders.I am just so disappointed with the neighbouring cats as they are now using the bottom of my bird table stand as a scratching post.So the birds will not come near any of my food at all from the bird table. The robins love me throwing it on the floor though.:))))

18 Feb, 2012

Great photo Sticki - !!

18 Feb, 2012

do the blackbirds come for food on the floor, i noticed the blackbird here seems to eat from the floor first before he goes onto the bird table.

18 Feb, 2012

thanks paul ~ its through the window!

18 Feb, 2012

They appear to be ground feeders and berry ones - and throw the bark chips about - blackbirds

18 Feb, 2012

they like sultanas!!! my sister has one that taps the window waiting for her to take them out!!!

18 Feb, 2012

great - will buy some for the birds then :))

18 Feb, 2012

Very good picture again Sticki, Just like opening the biscuit tin!

18 Feb, 2012

exactly pimms, no problem at all for a squirrel!!
thank you!!

18 Feb, 2012

I have experimented a lot with the squirrels as I have dozens of them visiting my garden. The best way to beat them is by hanging my bird feeder from a tree branch with a long fine cable. Cute but too many of them lately.

18 Feb, 2012

good idea, thanks costas

18 Feb, 2012

Some of you have real problems with these little cuties don't you! I've never had one in my garden, but I do love to see your photos of them and this one made me laugh! :)

18 Feb, 2012

The reason I have too many Karen it's because of a nearby park with a brook running through it. And too many foxes also.

18 Feb, 2012

Poor you Costas...We also have a park nearby, and fields too, and a stream runs around our estate as well! It's funny that we never get so much as a field mouse or a rabbit. When I was living in the city I had much more wildlife! lol...strange isn't it?

18 Feb, 2012

we have plenty of mice, probably wood mice ~ the cat finds them too!! rabbits dont seem to come in the garden ~ maybe my cat warns them off!?

makes me laugh too karen, like your new avatar!

18 Feb, 2012

He's cheeky alright.
I'm sorry to say Mark61, that Grey Squirrels HAVE been seen to eat birds eggs, young from the nest and adult birds.

18 Feb, 2012

very naughty and very cheeky, he/she even looks in my window!!!
they are not so cute after all then?

18 Feb, 2012

he's a clever little rascal isn't he... :-))

18 Feb, 2012

you have to admire them dont you? do you remember that advert with the squirrel doing all sorts to the mission impossible music?

18 Feb, 2012

yes i remember that Lol, i have a few round here they keep burying their cob nuts :-) i've had 2 or 3 seedlings grow :-))

18 Feb, 2012

I think these dig more things up than they plant/bury!!

18 Feb, 2012

A great pic. Sticki our squirrels behave like that they steal all the birds food ,I watched 3 of them this morning chasing each other round and round having a jolly good game I love watching them even if they are pests .......

18 Feb, 2012

thank you! i took loads of pictures but they are so fast its hard to get the picture of them without blurring it!!!

I have a holly tree right outside our bedroom window with several birds feeders hanging on it , this is the squirrels favourite place ,they use to run and hide whenever I went near the window with the camera but they have become use to me and stay even if I open or shut the window , they have become brave my OH calls them tree rats !!

18 Feb, 2012

i bet they loved it, sadly yes they are like tree rats but i prefer to think of the mischievous squirrel nutkin!!

18 Feb, 2012

Fantastic, squirrels don't seem to be in the garden now though I hear them barking in the trees below.

Faved.

18 Feb, 2012

they chatter when they are cross, they make me laugh when they do that!!

18 Feb, 2012

I was really confused when I first heard their barking. Had to Google it and listen. Mystery solved :)

18 Feb, 2012

Smashing picture Sticki...we've all been there when we thought nobody was looking ;)

18 Feb, 2012

That made me laugh Scottish!
I don't think this one would care if anyone was looking or not though, this is two feet from the kitchen window!

18 Feb, 2012

Naughty squirrel. Odd we don't see them here, I think there are 3 reasons why not!

19 Feb, 2012

Morning lulu! Ah yes 3 bouncy reasons? But also not so many oak trees as there are here!

19 Feb, 2012

Very clever little devils but so cute lol

19 Feb, 2012

:-) they are pansy!!

19 Feb, 2012

my cat tries to catch them but she doesnt stand a chance, they tease her and run away!!!

22 Feb, 2012

Brilliant pic Sticki, he's so cute I'm sure you turn a blind eye :o)

22 Feb, 2012

no i keep watching them and laughing, too fast for a photo!
thanks lily

I have one of these, sold as "squirrel proof"; the wires may be a bit wider apart, and they have no trouble getting in. I thought of adding more wire to narrow the gaps, but not sure how much, don't want to stop birds getting in. I don't fill it too full in case the worked out how to oepn the lid; not exactly secure, is it?

24 Feb, 2012

not even with extra wire on the lid fran!!

24 Feb, 2012

I have a square feeder, for suet or toast; one day I noticed it was missing; being visually impaired, and it being green, it took me a while to find it - i'd hung it on an S hook on my wire mesh fence. they'd not only got it off the hook, but over the fence; i finally saw it on the grass on the other side of the fence. i had to tie a bit of string to the hook and fish for it till i was able to get it back.

Since then I've tied feeders to the fence; that don't stop the wires being gnawed through, but at least until squirrels learn to untie knots ...

24 Feb, 2012

only a matter of time!!!

24 Feb, 2012

lol yep! I have a video, Daylight Robbery 2, where they set an obstacle course for squirrels; only one made it all the way through, but once she'd learned, she did it frequently.

That implies there was a Daylight Robbery 1, but I've not been able to find anything about it.

There are clips of 2 on YouTube.

Your squirrel looks a bit red-ish, is it? or just a trick of the light?

24 Feb, 2012

I think he deserves his reward Sticki, so cute:-)

25 Feb, 2012

No fran, this is a grey squirrel,

Think so too BA!

25 Feb, 2012

it looks like it's got a gleam in its eye and is going, Yum-yum, I'm going to enjoy this!

25 Feb, 2012

I've got similar feeders Stickie and they don't break and if they can't get in it, they shake it and all the food goes on the ground. I also put some feeders on my washing line, right in the middle , but they manage to still get on to it. I give up!

4 Mar, 2012

i just watch them rose, they entertain me no end!! they even look in the window!!

4 Mar, 2012

Hubby and I both enjoy watching them , but I don't like it when they take all the birds food. Still, it would be a dull day without them!

6 Mar, 2012

the birds just dont seem to come to that feeder ~ could possibly be afraid of the squirrels???

6 Mar, 2012

they have your feeders worked out sticki haha, naughty arent they :o))

7 Mar, 2012

naughty but nice!!!

7 Mar, 2012
