Our Heathers usually do well, but are going great guns from around December until now...really pleasing to look at in bit of a dull garden at the mo...

I have some heather, but not for much longer, I fear - I couldn't work out which kind it was, so just put it into ordinary compost; it might be the time of year, or that it's the other kind that needs ericacious compost. That'll teach me to buy cheap and not-well-labelleed from supermarkets.

Hi Fran...Mine went into sandy soil when we moved here, didn't get much option, untreated uncared for...but I've only lost one in three nearly four years years. OH gives everything in the Garden a Miracle grow liquid fertiliser, the one you snap onto the the hose couple of times a year, and the rest of the time, the're surrounded by mulch...mainly because everything is densly planted, and not much soil to be seen lol...

thanks, Criss; it might be lack of nourishment - confess I've not been out much for past couple of weeks - did find some slow-release feed pellets and shared them amongst the pansies, grasses and the heathers; more of hte pansies have started blooming,.

I have a garden hose clip on feeder thingy, the only prob is there isn't an on switch for it, so i have to turn the tap on and run out to grab it and start using the spray that's already coming out, by which time the feeder tank is half empty anyway!

As my garden's handkercheif-sized, it's actually quicker to use watering cans (though not easier on back or shoulders!)); I had some plant food powder which I scoop into the can before I fill it. Need to get some more, though.

I read a tip, years ago, that when you finish a bottle of milk, fill it with tap water and use that to water plants; the milk residue feeds them or something. I've been doing it for years and don't think I've ever killed a plant by it (well, byu overwatering, yes, but that'd happen anyway). I have a stack of large milk bottles outside the back door, so they can get natural temperatures before using them.

Sounds like a good idea Fran...With the hose, if you bend the hose over, and hold it double, the water can't escape, before time, just don't hold it toward you lol.
We haven't fed a plant yet, only the freshly dug ground has been nourished...Don't feel like doing anything till it's warm enough to make a day of it...just looking after the inside growing more at the mo...

Oh, the hose itself has an on-switch nozzle thingy, but I have to take that off to put the feeder on: don't think I could put the nozzle back on again to keep the "off" switch - to be honest, never occurred to me till just now.

As all my plants are in pots or troughs, and as I have to lug sacks of compost home on foot and on the shopping trolley frame, one at a time, I tend to re-use it more than I should for the good of the plants: it ends up as just somethng to hold the plants in, with no nourishment value left, so I have to remember that it's "inert" and feed more or less as I would a houseplant.

ooh that sounds like hard work, don't think my hands could cope...not strong enough.

it's my upper arms and shoulders and back that protest, especially reaching up and over to get to the plants at the back and the top of the "steps".

To be honest, it's less aggro than trying to fit the hose to the kitchen tap so that it doesn't spray half the kitchen (why don't they make tap adaptors that actually *work*???). and at least I'm not affected by hosepipe bans. Of course, were my garden bigger, it'd be impractical except in extreme conditions.
