After a good few days of spring weather, we are back to winter today, dark, drab and sleeting......I love this little Cherry though, the first one brave enough to flower.......

I think Cherry blossom is my favourite - though I love all blossom. This is gorgeous - flowering so densely. :))
Sleet here yesterday too; now the sun is shining - but a bitterly cold wind.

Really lovely to see an early Cherry tee blooming. Around here there are several in bud but the Blackthorns have begun opening this week!

I love this cherry, Janey - any idea of the variety? I'm having a struggle trying to decide which one to buy for the new garden! Thanks. . .

Hi Sheila....now this is an old pic. This cherry tree grew like the wind this last couple of years, but I've pruned it back to small again.... It is very early flowering..I see this was March, but late February, the first buds open...
I remember when we bought it, it was reduced, it had no label and was desperate to be planted..
I do know the variety when I see it...lol...so,I'm going to have a look for you..xx

It's the Prunus Cerasifera Pissardii Sheila, purple leaved plum....which is to the right here....
I had a feeling it was the Nigra but it does have white flowers that are blush tinted...a beautiful tree and red cherries, mid summer..though really they should be called plums...lol..

Many thanks Janey, that was quick! I brought a Prunus cerasifera with me but pruned it back putting it into a pot - apparently that was a big mistake. It now looks a very poor specimen, so I think buying new is the best option. Yours is gorgeous:))

That's a shame Sheila...yes you're probably right in buying new. Mine had grown with lots of crossing branches, so I've cut it back and opened it up.. Also through it grows the climbing rose Compassion, and now I can prune that well too, it blooms all summer and right down to December..:)).
