Wow, yours are a long way through -Amy, mine only a couple of inches so far, but enough for snipping into mash on cottage pie later.....:)))

I've bought tubs of mint, chives and basil from Tesco, but I've never managed to keep them alive for long. I always thought mint was rampant and invasive, yet mine always seemd listless. of course, the moral is, buy proper seeds or proper plants from a proper shop!

They are already growing in your garden, Amy? In my garden I noticed just shy tips of hyacinths liberating themselves from the heavy earth embrace :) Nothing to share :(

I haven't tried Chives like that Fran ,it is something I will try .. Janey / Sticki you are making my mouth water , yummy ! Fran the ones you buy at Tesco aren't meant to last they meant to use at once they put loads off seeds in crowding them together .. I have a whole row in my garden if you would like a root to start you off let me know .. It been much colder your way Kat I have some nice Fennel ready for use as well , yours will be showing themselves soon .....

i haven't had it like that for years Amy, i'll have to do it again thanks, yours look lovely there :-)

8 Mar, 2012

that's about all i do use them for, Amy: remember the first time mum dished up cheese on toast with what looked like chopped grass on it!

8 Mar, 2012

We use it in the same way, Fran. Toast, special fermented cheese which looks like cream, little bit onion (young one), cut into very small pieces and covered with chives.

No Fran I buy the supermarket tubs of herbs and re plant them out, they do really well. The tubs that they are grown in for the super market hav just enough nutrient and compost..if any..to get them through till the sell by date.

Mint likes a rich damp compost, so pot it on and water it well.

ah, right, thanks Pim. I did repot one lot once, splitting each into at least two other pots to give 'em more chance, but that didn't seem to work too well. Ah well, that was just after I'd moved here and i mayhave had other things on my mind than watering plants!

Sometimes we need our memories jogging Slad Sounds as though I've been missing a treat ! next time I have cheese on toast it will have a Chive topping . thanks for the tip .. LOL. Grass Fran !! did you pick it all off ?

I have done that Pp I like to do it with Basil it's so expensive to buy.. I use it a lot and one plant is never enough , I grow it and then freeze it for the winter ...

Looking really healthy Amy, they are perennial, so I'm hoping mine will pop through in the garden, but am taking no chances, I have a tub on the go with seeds in..
Love the smell the taste, I very often just snip a stem off and eat it, they're gorgeous in salads, and don't forget the flowers to garnish....

Very healthy and way ahead of ours, we are just re-vamping the herb bed, as we lost loads of new herbs last winter....

I hope your seeds do well for you Sue , I read in my herb book that herbs only last about 3 years Angela I'm going to replace some of mine this year the sage and thyme have grown old a woody .........

17 Mar, 2012

You're so right....Amy, doesn't do any harm to replace, I generally try and take cuttings during the growing season, and start new plants...Our Lemon Thyme was killed by the - temperatures here, so a new plant is on the cards..+ OH wants an ordinary Thyme too..I've got Lemon Grass, just set, and Sage and Basil...all that was cut and dried last year has lasted us well...Love all the different aromas...

I'm interested in the Lemon Grass you grow Sue, is it easy to grow ? I use it in cooking having always bought it from a store It would be nice to grow my own , I don't think I've ever seen packets of seed I will google it ...

Hi Amy, I found it a bit of a pain to grow, last year I got my seeds from Amazon, amongst others...

The trick I Think is to sprinkle the seeds on top of the compost, or growing medium, and spray, then pop in a plastic bag, that's what I've done this time...
I'll let you know how it goes....
