Is this about the right time for them to flower or are they a bit early ? How long will the flower last?
I sound like an eight year old..."Are we there yet?"

I hope you find yours Angela , they usually flower from April to June Pp .. it is a little early , I've never actually logged how long they are in flower for , I will this time and let you know .. you might have to wait for another year Motinot before having your first flower it will be worth it ........

That is lovely Amy!

they are a beautiful plant, this looks like a cultured version of the trilliums that clothe the hillsides here...usually in late April/early May. They produce rhizomes/underground stems and it takes seven years for them to mature from seed to flower. They are protected in the wild as they are the provincial emblem of Ontario. They should not be "picked" as this removes the food producing part of the plant and the larger organism dies of starvation if the leafy part is removed. This looks like the dark red, wildflower "Wake Robin" does it have a disagreeable scent?

Thanks Meanie , what a lovely lot of information Lori , I didn't know they were the emblem of Ontario , we are always learning on GOY , I haven't picked any but I'm glad you have told me the reason why we shouldn't . I wouldn't want to harm the plant , I got down on my hands and knees this afternoon to smell it , it didn't appear to have any scent , I ask OH to do the same he couldn't smell anything either , perhaps you need several blooms to get enough scent ...

Gorgeous colour, like that...

Its a real beauty Amy. I seem to be buying all the plants you have on Goy! Ive been trying to find plants that suit woodland conditions/shade. These are not usually available in the GC's though where did you manage to get yours?

I think i read somewhere that these take seven years to get from a seed to a plant ~ no wonder they are so special!!

Sticki , Lori in the above message said it takes 7 years from seed to flower she has included lots of interesting info !
Poppy I was lucky in that we were visiting some open garden in the area a few years ago when one of the garden owners had some roots of this plant for sale , it didn't come up at all last year I thought it had died so am pleased to see it this year ...

oh sorry Lori, I did read your interesting comments but i have a feeling i have read it elsewhere too!!
3 Apr, 2012
Thanks Pp , I will go off and have a look now :o)
3 Apr, 2012
That was very interesting Pp , I didn't know there were so many different ones , I still don't know which one mine is to give it a name ! How strange that the scents should vary so much ,I couldn't smell mine at all ....

The wake robin has a very distinctive smell, Amy. There is no smell to the white trillium (emblem) ...There are many varieties so perhaps the newer varieties and the European varieties have no scent?...

Think I will be buying Trillium erectum in the Autumn Amy.. Scent of wet dog, but what a flower!
4 Apr, 2012
where will you get it from pimms? all the places i have looked at charge such a lot in postage.
4 Apr, 2012
They should not be on sale until autumn Sticki..But I will keep you in mind and let you know...Where / what I find.
Have you seen the link ...Ones that smell of roses , wet dogs, spice and rotting apples.
4 Apr, 2012
I will try smelling it again on a warm day Lori maybe it need some sunshine to encourage it :o)
I agree with you Pp T.erectum is a beauty, if you get one you will have to let us know about the smell LOL... !

I had pictures of them on my page last year and perhaps the year before, Sticki....sorry if I confused anyone by referring to the white trillium without first acknowledging Amy's lovely T.erectum. We take them rather for granted over here...every spring the forest floor is white with them...rather like the show the bluebells put on in your woods. Any luck with the Jack in the Pulpit seeds yet, Amy? It's about 2 weeks too early for the shoots to emerge...our weather has been unseasonably warm in March and turned cold and blustery in April...will be looking for them in three or four weeks time.
4 Apr, 2012
Lori One seedling of the jack in the Pulpit started to appear but has since started looking a little sickly , I wonder if I set them to soon in the cold weather I have since put more seeds in hoping that we will be getting some warmer weather soon , I will let you know what happens next :o)
