very true lulu, perhaps the christmas fairy will protect it???
10 Apr, 2012
Lovely...maybe it will survive "til the night before Christmas" :))

lets hope so scottish!! although i hope it will be a bit longer??

I am just SO envious that your hosta has leaves at all - mine seem to be on strike!!!

i bought it new today wildrose, the rest are still in bud!
thanks pixi, i liked it too!!
10 Apr, 2012
I didn't mean before it died completely, just til it dies back. Didn't mean to upset your Hosta Sticki :))))). Im sure you'll be enjoying it for years to come :)
Wildrose have you tried just looking below the surface of the soil. All of mine bar one is through. I had a wee poke about today and it's just about to poke its head out. I thought I had lost it!!

oh thats ok then thanks scottish ~ shall i go and tell it you didnt mean it???
10 Apr, 2012

Lovely! I'm making all sorts of plans for 'hanging hostas of Spain' in my garden as I love them so much - trouble is we're surrounded by walls that act as high-rise accommodation for snails! I can't put down anything fatal to get rid of them because we also have wall lizards and I don't want my garden to turn into an animal cemetary, so I'm trying to devise something where I can keep hostas withOUT the snails! Probably an exercise in futility!

"Night Before Christmas"!!
They're off their heads aren't they!!??
I've lifted one of my hostas for the move, but I'm giving it to Sue as I found it too invasive!
11 Apr, 2012
LOL maybe that's when the first new variety emerged !
11 Apr, 2012
it is similar meadowland ~ they also had fire and ice which i like very much but i had already got that.
good thought amy!
i must say they are creative with their names meanie!!
nariz, let me know how you get on, there was that wonderful garden full of hostas a little while ago on tv including many hanging hostas ~ could you hang them just a little away from the wall???
im now wondering if i could hang them on my fence ~ you have got me thinking now ~ thank you!!

Looks a lovely plant, Sticki. I noticed on ebay yesterday there was a seller who dealt only with hostas, over 400 varieties and what a lot of funny names. I was very tempted :)
11 Apr, 2012
the baby ones are nice too Gee; some names seem eminently suitable but you do wonder about others??!!
i think heucheras have good names
11 Apr, 2012
That's gorgeous, Sticki, despite the daft name.
Love hostas, but so do my slugs. Nariz, that is a really good suggestion. I will try that. They would look really good in baskets and it means I could have baskets in the shady bit of the garden, too.
11 Apr, 2012
thanks oji, same here ~ far too many slugs ~ yuk!!
baskets would be nice
11 Apr, 2012
That's a very pretty Hosta, Sticki ... shame about the daft name though ... I had Hostas in large pots last year by the South facing front door ... they actually thrived better than the ones in the shady area of the back garden! ... No rhyme or reason to the gardening 'rules' sometimes ... lol!

lovely sticki hostas are brill i love them (put oyster grit shell around the bases ) or any coarse sharp gravel lol
11 Apr, 2012
thanks shirley, i have a feeling some hostas are fine in the sun but others prefer the shade??
where do you get oyster grit pete?? sounds a good idea
just thought it would be interesting to make a collection of strangely named plants!!
11 Apr, 2012
its found at pet shops sticki or farm supplies its grit for hens cheers
12 Apr, 2012
You're welcome, Sticki! Isn't there something along the lines of 'Great minds ...........?' ;o)
12 Apr, 2012
thanks pete
i think there is, it will be trial and mostly error here!!
12 Apr, 2012
Saw a Hosta named 'Guacamole' this morning .....
12 Apr, 2012
only the slugs could tell us if it tasted good i suppose shirley??
12 Apr, 2012
Lol, Sticki!!! .......

Night before Christmas? How on earth did that name get associated with a Hosta? Very nice plant anyway Stickie. Providing you can keep the slugs away hostas seem to do well in most places. I have some in the front garden where the sun shines for a lot of the day. They make good pot plants as well. I divide mine up every few years.

i have two very well established and much too large hostas that i need to split up linda, they have been in the garden forever [here when we came] so i think they may be a bit of a challenge!
13 Apr, 2012
they are tough to dig up and split but need doing really in the late Autumn.
