Going by the last few summers (who thought it could get worse!) I think bright colour leaf plants are the way to go and thats what im going to do in future, if we are forecast a decent summer then ill buy flowering plants, if not then i have my bright leave'd plants for colour, im sick of waiting for the flowers and growth to arrive..
Heucherella Redstone falls and Yellowstone falls (trailing)
Lysimachia Midnight sun, Colius, canna that survived the mild winter in the Ghouse, it could be orange or red! and a red geranium in this pot gives a nice bit of colour on these dull days..

Oh karen this pot just brightens up the bottom of the garden, its seen from all directions and lifts me, a first for Heucherella for me, next year im seriously going to look into more bright leave'd plants, ive also bought some lovely heuchera but the yellow leave'd ones (creme brulle) arent doing much, i lost one and the other one is struggling! marmalade is romping away and a gorgeous Silver one (label disappeared out the border!) is looking lovely. Ive tried a few different plants this year, if they do well ill buy them again, if not i wont. Gett'n a bit to expensive this gardening Lark :)

good choice of leaf colours :o)))

Beautiful colours and I think I might ake a leaf out of your book and bright foliage plants instead of flowers!

Clarice i havent grown petunia's for about 5/6 years because the petals go all soggy, they hate the rain!
I bet that basket is gorgeous Sticky.
Thanks TT..
Try it Pansyp, at least our gardens wont be just green :))

I lost all but one of my bright green heuchs DD. The survivor is Lime Marmalade and it's looking good, so you could try that one. Plants are expensive aren't they, and it's frustrating when you lose them.

Heuchera are especally expensive Karen, as with other plants i usually buy bogof or hit the sales :))) So Lime marmalade and Marmalade are different ?

Love heucheras I have been adding a few more each year:) It's looking lovely!

Brilliant YDD who needs sun with colours like that ;o)

I dont blame you, we have gone the dahlia route this year, have a few canas and the bananas, but changed things because of the weather.....some Heuchera are much better than others....

That's the nice thing about Heucheras, they stay looking colourful all year...I've planted Georgia Peach with two young Lime Rickey, in a large Pot, and they look lovely and bright...The nice thing about Heucheras Yd, is that when big enough, you can split them to make more, and swap a few with your friends....that helps to keep the cost down...

Crissue is quite right, they propogate very easily from splitting/root cuttings. YDD Lime Marmalade is Lime coloured, but has the lovely curly edges to the leaves that Marmalade has. The thing I forgot to say yesterday is the lime/yellow ones need full shade really. They get scorched by sun. Mine were killed by the cold though, not the sun.....as if! lol ;)

Hahaha Karen, same here, I know some like shade and some like sun and shade, my palace purple seeds all over the gravel and is so easy to grow unlike the marmalade. the lime marmalade sound lovely, ill give it a try, plenty shade here lol.
Nanad, thats what ill do, add each year and hopefully split some..
Thanks Amy.
DD, i must confess, i bought 2 Bananas, Musa and Ensette, only because they were really cheap :) My daliah are (all 4 of them) are doing fantastic, i had to thin one out yesterday it was too big and heavy..
Crissue, I bet your Huchera pot looks Fab, I would love to see a pic :)

I absolutely adore Heucheras!
Your pot looks lovely Dee!
I only have 3 types at the mo, Licorice, Blackberry Jam, and Sugar frosting (dont you just love the names as well?)
I'm off to Hampton Court tomorrow and cant wait to see the Heucharas, will definitely be coming back with some as well as 1/2 dozen Clematis!

Enjoy the day, don't forget the Umbrella..

I have several heucheras and I agree that the red and the bronze ones are more sturdy, but the green and the yellowy ones are surviving although they haven't grown enough to split yet. Several of them have lovely flower spikes which the bees love. That's good because my garden is largely grown for the bees!

Never grown Heucheras but may be worth the while as my Petunias are really suffering in the cold, wet & windy "summer" we are having!
How do these stand up to the wind? My balcony gets a lot of wind & many of my plants have the young foliage burned away by the winds. Fuchsias are very susceptible to windburn.
Surprisingly the Petunias hold up quite well - even if the flowers end up torn to shreds!

Hello Balcony,
Well, I think it might be worth trying a couple. I have a red leaved one in a very windy place and it does very well. As I said before, I find the red and bronze ones the toughest. You can quite often buy small plants to grow on fairly cheaply at garden fairs and boot sales. I got most of mine as small plants in this way.

Thanks for that, PF, I'll have to keep a lookout then. :-))
